Best Anti-Virus Software? - Page 4

I run the paid version of Avast and Malware Bytes. Best investments I've made, IMHO.
does anyone know whether or not this is subscription based where it expires and i pay again after X amount of time

I had ESET suite for the longest time and LOVED it! but since I got Comcast..I can now get Norton Security Suite for free... unlimited time...both have been great. ESET was a little lighter, but Norton feels more powerful.

You'll never get full protection. If a hacker targets you, no AV or IS will stop him. The only way to get full protection is to unplug your ethernet cable.
But other than that, to stop common malware, I would indeed advise you to get a decent (paid) Internet Security Suite.

In any case, don't get an AV. What's the point of having an AV if it only detects and doesn't prevent malware?

On my personal PC's I use MSE+ widnows built in FW. Have for the last 8-9 months. Before that I used Avast! (legally free version) and window's built inFW. IMO, any free AV and a properly configured FW and common sense while on the interweb's is fine, never had a problem so far.

MSE Sucks
XP: http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/test-reports/janfeb-2012/
Win 7: http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/test-reports/novdec-2011/
Yes, It sucks bad
and we all like graphs:
Source: virusbtn.com

Go read up on Kaspersky's blog, securelist.com , if you think you 'don't need AV'.

Its odd that the version of MSE used in both tests is so outdated. It should still use the same definitions I would imagine but still.

From a performance standpoint and resource usage, I have always found Avira free to be very good. And since I use a HIPS like Comodo Firewall with its Defense Plus active then I really don't need a top notch AV detection.

I believe Maximum PC in there 2011 Holiday issue presented boot, file copy, and benchmark times and Avira scored well in performance. Webroot for commercial side did excellent in both performance and malware protection.

I think MaximumPC lets you download PDF archives if you get a login to their site.

I am just now moving from Win XP 32-bit to Win7 64-bit and will be using Avira + Comodo Firewall combination and hope I get good performance from that as well.

Now on my wifes PC, I use Norton since she seems to always get Fake AV on her machine via hijacked Google search results that Avira does not catch. So if you have a family member that searches for fonts, clipart, etc then its best to go with something like BitDefender, Webroot, or Norton.

MSE skips from 2.1 to 4.0. There is no MSE 3 or MSE 3.x
