advice on AMD cpu for gaming rig! - Page 3

:doh.gif so much misinformation..I really should remove posts kookoo.gif yeah..I had to..misinformation=bad
Thuban has the highest IPC out of AMD cpus..therefore..Thuban is the best choice if you stick with AMD
FX cpus have low IPC..NOT good for Gaming
Intel has higher IPC ..good for gaming
IPC=Instructions per clock
In other words..gets it done faster sonic.gif
FYI I sold a 5.4 2500K and kept my Zosma..(960T) because.I just like it biggrin.gif
and yes..It's better for gaming than any FX cpu

I'm pretty happy with my Microcenter 960T (they were $89).

Honestly though if you're near a microcenter and they do another 2500K deal that will obliterate the AMD. My stock-clocked 2500K HTPC is as fast as the overclocked 960T.

If you look at real world gaming bencmarks, K10.5, FX, SB, IVB and nehalem chips are all quite capable. They only show a significant difference in performance when frame rates are above 60fps, otherwise they are typically within about 10% of eachother. The Tomshardware, Guru3d, Techspot, Hardwareheaven and Kitguru FX-8150 review all show realistic circumstances which show that CPU performance still isn't terribly important unless you want to push a 120Hz display or run benchmarks. A lot of reviews consider medium settings at 720p to be an appropriate method of determining gaming performance, then decide a chip is terrible at running games because it only pulled 150fps doh.gif

The 8120 is a solid choice for BF3, although it requires some moderate overclocking to get the best value out of it. The 2500K and 3570K are a better choice for playing most other games, as few engines use more than 2 or 4 threads, and they are more energy efficient.

FX-8120 ALL THE WAY! Not only will it do better in BF3, it will be cheaper as well. Sabertooth is $55 less on AM3+ than 1155. With those savings, you can invest in what really matters for games, a graphics card. 6950 was $199 on newegg last I checked.

Here are some real world benchmarks comparing a Sandy Bridge with Bulldozer using a single 7970. For almost every single game, there will be no perceivable difference in the two.
Also, you can get a 990FX Sabertooth for $190 as opposed to the $250 youll need to spend on an Intel Sabertooth.
Yes Intel is faster, but unless youre using multiple GPU's at very high resolutions, youre not going to see a difference in 99% of games and youll save a good chunk of money.
So go with a FX-8120 and Asus Sabertooth, put a Hyper 212+ on it for $30 and overclock it to 4.4.or 4.5, pair it with a capable video card and youll have a system thatll handle any game out there with no problem.

^^^^ I second this!

Big difference between the FX 8120 vs a 2500k...... with the FX chip you have no choice but to buy a beefy board so it doesn't have problems with the high power draw. With the 2500k, you can run it on the cheapest 4 phase P67, z68 or z77 boards and it'll still overclock to 4.8GHz. Or you can grab the $120 z68 Extreme3 Gen3 for future additions.

Honestly in gaming there's going to be little difference, but I certainly wouldn't buy a $200 motherboard on either platform. You can go with a cheaper board and you'll have more money for the GPU.

My personal favorite setup to recommend is a 2500k / 3570k with the z68 Extreme3 Gen3, or the z77 Extreme4 (pretty sure that's the cheapest z77 that supports SLI / Crossfire at 8x / 8x). But like its been said, in gaming you're not going to notice the difference between an Intel and AMD with a single GPU unless its a high end GPU or an SLI / Crossfire setup. If SLI / Crossfire is in your future, then you're going to want Intel regardless.

Or......you could go this route:
960T combo for $250 shipped.

or this:
M5A97 for $70 shipped plus this X6 1075T for $100 shipped.

I would go with the 960T combo as it is a BE chip and can oc very easily to roughly 3.7 to 4.0ghz.

Pick a decent gpu, psu, case, and and hdd and you are set.

Thanks for the input, it's given me a lot to think about. But, i'm still wondering how much money i want to spend on a rig for a 13 year old, lol. I know the Intel route would probably be better performance wise, but i'd really like to spend the extra money on a really nice GPU also, which is why i'm still leaning a little more to an AMD setup atm

I totally agree. I spent way too much on this board, believing the hype and it's been nothing but disappointment.
