CPU Upgrade

Thread Starter
I have A Pentium 4 with a 16Kb + 12Kb L1 Cache a 1MB L2 cashe 200 Bus and an 800Mhz FSB

and my motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186048

its a 915 chipset XD and DDR1

I realy need to do a processor upgrade because im planing on getting a 8800GT or GTX

so whats a major(ish) upgrade for less than 200 bucks that wont bottle neck my 7800GT and possibly a 8800GT

i dont realy want to toss the ram i currently have either

what should i do?

ABSOLUTELY NO CPU will be bottleneck free on an 8800GT/GTX, let alone your 7800GT! Even the new Core2's will still present somewhat of a bottleneck, however, it will be MUCH less that what your or even my P4 present.

If you want to go with a G80, I would recommend a new mobo, new cpu, and new ram to go with it because anything that was netburst will hold back your GPU like an anchor. :-\\

It's a shame I know, but it's not worth putting an 8800 series in either your or my own PC, it would be a waste of $400 unfortunately.

Well, the AsRock 775DualVSTA mobo supports C2D and DDR RAM, but isn't too good of an overclocker. And only has PCI-E X4. It's the only one I can think of at the moment...for Intel C2D

You might as well upgrade the whole system, but you can still hang on to it until G80/R600 comes out

Haha...well yes they do. Even though I'm personally an Intel guy, AMD prices are looking pretty darn nice right now and I've even been tempted myself to try an Opty 148 system of a 3700SD rig just to get into AMD. Not to mention all s939's take DDR1 and can overclock fairly well depending on the batch you get. AMD also has all the best DFI and SLI mobo's ;-)

If you wanted to stay with Intel though, I would suggest staying with your own mobo if it's a good over clocker and upgrade to a 641 or something like that... 65nm process tech would help you get a 4Ghz+ oc with some good cooling and it would be a huge jump from what you have now...

Yea I just looked and there isn't shizzz for mobo's with P4, DDR400, PCIEx16 all in one package that's made by a decent manufacturer...

It's too bad ASUS discontinued my mobo, this thing seems to be an animal for a 915 chipset, hitting 4.1+ Ghz. Sorry dude, AMD may be the way to go here.
