It's all good for desktop users to use when they lose a connection for a while but if you've ever tried to game through steam with a laptop in a place with no connection or only paid ones you'll know that the offline mode doesn't really work.

Well I have and it works. When im at my countryhouse which has no internet connection i still manage to start to steam in offline mod. The only time it havent worked is if steam has been closed before restarting aftar an update. Now you can debate this all you want but my experience and memory tells me that i've been playing mu steam games without any conenction for the past two years without anyother hitchup than the above mentioned.

Judging from so many users here, other forums, and massive google search results. Your a lucky person. It's a major issue thats been around for a very long time and no fix. Such a simple and easy thing to fix it should be. Yet they don't care to fix it.

I hate to say this, but if another company did this, it would be unacceptable. I'd hate to see the reactions if this was not an issue on Steam, but was so on Origin. People would be saying how that lone, is reason NOT to use Origin.

For the record, I am not pro-Origin. I've not downloaded it or even seen a screenshot of it. I have zero experience with it. The only thing I know about it, is what is said in these forums, most of which is negative. Gotta throw that out their or I'll be labeled as Anti-Steam or an Origin fan or something...

I think the point is that you're not actually understanding what he's saying/what you are reading.

The point is that if you have not previously logged into offline mode while actually connected to the internet, then when you actually do attempt to go into offline mode when your internet service suddenly drops, you will not be able to.

Ironically, Origins offline mode does not suffer the same problems and is regarded as an offline mode that "just works".

And all the things you listed are great features and Steam is to be commended for making it such a pleasure to use. I'm not arguing any of that. The fact remains that its forced on you, without your choice. Want to play our games? Tough, download, install and run our program all the time or no game for you.
It's great to have these features available but I think its very important that we as a community let publishers and devs know we will not be bullied into everything. Steam is great, but it should be optional, simple as that. The part that scares me most is that the community is so Pro-Steam that we're digging our own graves. Once one company can get away with something, all companies will exploit this. I worry that in 10 years, I will be forced to download, install and constantly run a program for almost every game I play, as it seems all publishers will have their own DRM clients like Steam/Origin.
I remember buying a MS game... what was it... Sector 8 or something? I bought it for one purpose. To play SP game during commutes. Guess what? GFWL and always online DRM for an offline SP game... I paid for a game that I could not play. That is not fair.
These are the types of things that are being forced upon the community. The direction the gaming industry is moving in is bad for us consumers. Seriously, AAA DLC packs now cost more than most non-AAA titles themselves... what nonsense is this?

No-Cd and pirating are two totally different things if you have 15 games discs do you honestly have them on hand to slip in the drive on a daily basis with out them getting annoying. other then that i agree, almost whole heartedly. Make sure you check out GOG.
