Not true at all!

I lost my net, something happened...I don't know...it just wouldn't start up for a day or so, called Comcast, said they were having issues.

So I started up STeam, it tried to connect, said no connection found, asked me to start in Offline mode...I said yes..and it did.

It is quite true.

If you've never started in offline mode before and you have your internet connection die on you without warning, you will not be able to use offline mode.

I found that out the hard way when my connection died and wanted to play the F1 2011 I purchased on Steam. I asked on OCN why offline mode wasn't working and it was explained that you have to have used offline mode at least once while actually connected for it to work if you do ever lose your connection.

There will be many others in that same situation (i.e. who have never used offline mode while connected) who will not be aware of this and when their internet connection goes down without warning, they too will be unable to access their library.

I'm sorry I should have worded it better. With steam you cannot go into offline mode unless you had a connection earlier and you were already in online mode. And even then it doesn't work all the time.

It's all good for desktop users to use when they lose a connection for a while but if you've ever tried to game through steam with a laptop in a place with no connection or only paid ones you'll know that the offline mode doesn't really work.

Of course...

How the heck would...

I don't even understand what you're saying.

If you have no connection, how would it know your Steam account?

YOu pose a weird question. As long as you've connected to STeam at least once after you installed the game, Offline mode will work, and that's perfectly fair. Seriously.

I love SteamGuard to. Even if you click Phish links all day, your account is golden.

Steam... like it or hate it, its intrusive and pointless DRM thats forced upon users to play games. If you people can make such a stand against one DRM, why not all of them? Maybe they will stop. But this, "I will only use DRM if its Valves DRM" which sounds oddly familiar to the types of things we hear from fans of another, much less popular company...
Oh well.

The difference is simple, for me anyways... Steam does not REQUIRE a deep scan of my entire system (all hard drives, all folders, ect) in order to run, whereas with origin I couldn't even install it without one..that happens in the background without telling you I might add... So if i get a choice, i'll pick steam any day smile.gif

You need to be connected to the net/steam servers in order to first initiate offline mode--merely having connected to steam at some point is irrelevant unless you specifically initiated offline mode while still online. You cannot initiate offline mode without a proper connection to steam first. That's what he's saying. So unless you know you're going to be without a net connection, and you initiate offline mode while you still have one, if you go somewhere and can't get a net connection, you're SOL for playing steam games since it wasn't set up for offline mode before you lost your connection.

It's a legit issue where if you can't/haven't predicted that you're going to be without internet, you cannot enable offline mode and play your games.

Like if you game on a laptop, you go on a trip and don't enable offline mode on steam at home before you left, and then you get to some airport with no net connection, you still can't play your steam games since you never initiated offline mode when you did have a net connection.

That's the problem with how Steam's offline mode works.

We should only accept a single choice. And that choice is no forced apps/DRM. Though its a smart strategy. How many people have said something along the lines of "I will stick with Steam because I'm already heavily invested into Steam." which is similar to mobile OS's once you buy so many apps. And the whole argument of "well its the better DRM out of whats out there" is a defeatist attitude. Taking this stance opens the flood gates for this kind of crap. And with the community basically saying "Please valve, please restrict me and lock me down. Please load me up with DRM. We love you for it."

Obviously I was exaggerating to a large degree to make a point. Accepting such DRM, defending it, and shouting your love for it from the rooftops is a bad idea. I'm not looking forward to PC gaming in 10 years, its gonna be painful. You'll have to submit a blood and urine sample to play the game. Be forced to be watched on cam with audio to make sure your not cheating or anything. And have to pay extra for such a security feature tongue.gif

I want to buy a game. Install said game. Play said game. Nothing else. Why is this not allowed anymore?
