Why the case project was canceled and where we go from here.

Hey Folks,

I know that there has been alot of public outrage regarding the cancellation of the "Vector Series" case project. I know that there was alot of people looking forward to this project as well as I myself was one of these people. Id like to take a moment to explain why this project has been canceled and what the future holds for Lamptron moving into the computer case market.

First and foremost as alot of you have guessed, alot of the reasons behind the decision is associated with cost. You must remember this is a designer case exclusively built for enthusiasts. This is a very niche market here in the USA and EU this is not associated with massive production and sales. The case was extremely well constructed using only the best materials and in order to mimic that the price would have exceeded 199.99 USD probably pushing upwards of 299.99 USD and potentially higher depending on other factors.

Secondly the case design focused entirely on water-cooling. While this is not a bad thing in my eyes personally, upper management is looking for the case to have a combination of both in the interest of flexibility once again for the sake of sales. As you know once again the water-cooling community is a very niche market, and mass producing a product for a niche market is not as cost effective. Our goal is to broaden our reach where every major retailer stocks Lamptron computer cases for all to use from cheap budget builds to the highest end enthusiasts delivering that to you at minimal cost with the best quality.

So where do we plan on going in the future over the course of 2012? Well, it has been made a priority by upper management that at least ONE case product be released by the 2012 holiday season if not sooner. This is a major priority of ours as computer cases not only compliment our entire product lineup but give us room for expansion in ways that the company desperately needs. While our initial case designs may not be geared exclusively for enthusiasts, you can bet your ass that they will be extremely unique, and extremely well made and delivered to you at a very cost effective price. I hope you can understand the reasoning behind this and we look forward to having you all as future customers as we expand into our new product lineup's over the coming years.

Thanks again,
Robert @ Lamptron Marketing USA

I think I can speak for most here when I say this is a lousy reason. This IS an enthusiast community, talk to CaseLabs and see how well their cases are selling. They're not cheaper than 200 bucks, they're built for extreme people / enthusiasts. A lot of people here are willing to pay good money for good cases. There might be some here who do not understand with higher quality comes higher prices, but I'd wager that anyone interested in this case understood that mantra unequivocally. Just my two cents, good luck in the future

I dont see how that is an excuse, seeing as how the company needs to make the money back on case sales for design and production costs. Regarding of how well made it is, the price would have put it at a point where it would not have been a fast moving product other then in the enthusiast community, which makes up a small percentage of overall case sales in general.

well when your posting in an enthusiast market you better have better exccuses then that as the case was ment to be an enthusiast case and caselabs moves a very good number of such cases maybe you shoudl speak to their marketing team.

Looking at a business stand-point where the company's products are intended towards an intermediate-user to enthusiast level I can see the reasoning behind why the Vector series was cancelled.

Unlike the CaseLabs business model where they cater mainly to enthusiast level community like OCN (don't quote me on this, AFAIK and read from the forums that this is mostly the case).

IMHO in order to keep the company floating, products that cater to a larger audience should be put out first to fund other case productions and designs. If Lamptron does manage to release that "ONE" case and make a profit out of it, they could possibly include the vector in their series. AFAIK Lamptron has not released any kind of PC cases in their history unless my google-fu has failed me.

This "ONE" case could be a sort of test for their target market and if the response is good enough they might add more to their line-up.

But that's just my opinion.

You would be correct, depending on the outcome of our introduction into case products, will determine how far we push into the enthusiast market for these more custom expensive designs. We love working with enthusiasts for these types of products but in order to keep producing products at the level of quality that we strive for, sales must sufficient enough to finance these projects.

It's too bad you couldn't do this in small runs. It could have been a premium product that sets Lampton off in the premium segment. You could have integrated one of your top of the line fancontrollers. Like others say Caselabs also sell expensive cases and so do other brands. If you would have offered limited edition small runs of very expensive cases there would have been demand. There is always demand for special products.

I just hope the designer of this case can either do small runs himself or get them done by another company. It would be a huge shame if this design never saw the light of day.

edit; thanks anyway for taking the time to explain. It's more than what most companies do. thumb.gif

Or you could have done what ShapeOko is currently doing, accepting pre-orders to make the factory start working on the project...what they do is get cash from the pre-orders and confirm the payments up to a specific number of production runs...right now they're at 87 orders out of 100 before they can start production of the kits and these people paid around $199 to $999. So in order for the production to begin like I said they need 100 orders for the first batch. And they'll re-release another batch if the order reaches 100 pcs again.

You could try this kind of tactic as soon as the final prototype and first production type is finished.

It's always a sad day when the accountants get in the way of product development and stop what could have been a great product from reaching market, but I guess companies are out there to make money and the bean counters don't like to place bets on "we'll make money on this because it's exclusive"; they'd rather go with "we can make money on this because it will be cheap to build and we can sell a ton of them".

Too many accountants seem to forget that 10 products with $100 profit equals the same as 1000 with a $1 profit margin when it comes down to it. Loads of companies make a decent to good margin out of niche markets. My suggestion on cases to go forwards would be the compact tower, like the TJ08-E. Make the smallest possible air cooled case with great (and quiet) cooling you can that will fit an ATX board and a full set of parts. Or even, do what everyone does, and go for a midi-tower designed for air in the main, but able to fit a decent water loop. Then, when that's a success, push out the full sized water monster.
