Will i5 3570k and ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 be dissappointing?

Thread Starter
Hi all!

Micro Center has a combo deal for an i5 3570K and ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 mobo for ~$300. Is this a deal worth jumping on or should I consider a different setup?

I do very little video and photo work, but I'm a huge gamer. I have never had a cpu that could run current games on max settings and that is what I'm trying to build this time around. Due to budget restraints I'm going to have to buy parts over the next few months, so if there's something I should buy first and wait for later I'm all ears...

I'm a little worried about what I've been reading about overclocking the IB cpus. I'd like to overclock the 3570k a little, but nothing extreme where I have to worry about stability and possibly water cooling, so I'm thinking I'm still ok with the 3570K.

I'd also like the setup to last for a few years, so I'm thinking SLI down the road when the GTX 570's have dropped in price. Are there other steps I can take now to help the system last? Should I be looking at the newer intel sockets or is that just a huge gamble?

The rest of the parts I'm looking at buying are:
EVGA SuperClocked GTX 570 (Fermi)
CORSAIR Professional Series HX750 (CMPSU-750HX) 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91
Crucial M4 2.5" 128GB SATA III SSD
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000)

Any suggestions, comments, words of wisdom, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

No that wouldn't be disappointing upgrade from your c2d (listed in your rig) but i would recommend the 2500k (if overclocking) over the 3570k unless you get a 3570k for less then a 2500k. Also pick up a nice aftermarket cooler if your going to be ocing. Rest of the parts you listed look great.

There is absolutely no reason to OC IB equal to a SB OC to get the same performance.

Nope. You will be good-to-go with that configuration. I almost went with the same combo, but they were out of stock and instead got a Gigabyte Z77X-D3H. Only negative things I've heard about ASRock Z77 Extreme4's is that they used sub-par materials in some of the board pieces (not sure which) and that they are using a non-standard ATX size (even though they state ATX, it's actually a bit less wide than a normal ATX).

What i'm saying is usually IB is a bit more expensive, and runs a bit hotter when oc'd.

So if you can get SB for cheaper with the same cooling you were going to use, you would get more mhz, even though the ipc of IB is 5-10% better they would end up performing the same. So why pay more when you can get the same performance for lower cost.

I am tired of repeating this, but I will say it again; IB only gets hot at extreme overclocks...
