New CPU

Thread Starter
Hi guys, im looking to upgrade my CPU to a quad core AMD or intel for under $200. I want to play RTS games like Company of heroes, Men of war. Also GTA IV.

I like the AMD FX series CPU's. I know Intel is great too. Ive heard bad things about hyperthreading for gaming with Intel CPU's? Whats up with this?

I just want to most power possible for my buck. Also, any motherboard worth getting under $100?

Thanks a bunch.

Before I answer your questions, it would be useful to have some more information:

What will the rest of the system be ? GPU, for example ?

What resolution will you be playing at ?

Do you plan to overclock ?

If you want to play GTA IV maxed out (no mods) you will need a powerful CPU as the game is not very optimized and uses all four cores. When it comes to HT, sometimes it does hurt performance a little in games, at other times it helps. I upgraded from a Core 2 Quad Q9550 overclocked to 3.4 Ghz to a Core i7-3820, running at a max of 3.8 Ghz as of now, and although it has hyperthreading it performs a lot better than the Q9550. Imagine, in some games a Core i7 2600K might perform like a Core i5 2400, in others it performs more or less like a 2500K, sometimes a little slower, and in others it performs the best. If you want a comparison, go to Anandtech and go the the Bench, and compare the i5 2500K against the i7-2600K.

Cheers!

Well, if you don't want to overclock, I suggest the Core i5-3550, which you can buy for $209.99 from Newegg, it's the best CPU that you can get for the money with the best performance without overclocking. The AMD FX CPUs will not perform up to par unless you overclock them (and will use more power), so that is out of the equation.

Since you don't plan to overclock you can buy a decent H77 based motherboard like the GIGABYTE GA-H77M-D3H LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard, a Micro ATX board that is selling for $94.99 on Newegg, or the ATX sized GIGABYTE GA-H77-DS3H LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard, which is selling for $99.99 also on Newegg.

I don't see a massive CPU neccisary if you're keeping that GPU. almost any CPU that you can buy today around $200 will be bottlenecked by that GPU something fierce.

For someone who doesn't want to overclock, the 2500K is slower and uses more power. It also only has a PCIe 2.0 controller. Not that it matters right now, but if he ever buys a future high-end AMD HD8000 or Nvidia GTX700 series, it might.

The i5 3550 also has improved QuickSync he might want to use.

From a resale point of view, the 2500K might hold its value more because it's unlocked, but for someone who doesn't want to overclock, the i5-3550 has the best feature set, prepared for the future.
