My Dream Machine, but with an issue, Is my PSU the Problem?

Hey everyone, a few months ago my little sister had me build her a new computer for her school/work as an artist/video game designer ( http://www.overclock.net/t/1240246/building-an-art-beast ). With the help of this fantastic community I was able to build her an amazing machine on a pretty tight budget. Well, my sister and I live several hundred miles apart, and since my wife and I had a new baby on the way, my sister decided that instead of paying to ship the computer up to them, they had me hang on to it until they came to see the baby and would pick it up then. Well the more I played around with her computer the more I began to loath my own. I was only able to withstand the temptation for about 5 weeks, and finally I caved:

The Witch Doctor: http://www.overclock.net/lists/display/view/id/4308599

So far it is 89.4% perfect! I have been able to overclock to 4.875Ghz with only a little trouble, mostly lack of knowledge biggrin.gif Thanks to Sin0822 for his amazingly detailed post: www.overclock.net/t/1189242/sandy-bridge-e-overclocking-guide-walk-through-explanations-and-support-for-all-x79-overclockers Once I did the research and figured out what I was actually doing it was a piece of cake. Although I'm still not sure I really know what I'm doing biggrin.gif

A question, Why is it that the Higher I Overclock, the lower my PCMark7 scores?

Examples:

4.3Ghz Scores 5721 http://3dmark.com/pcm7/357305

4.4Ghz Scores 4790 (???) http://3dmark.com/pcm7/347531;jsessionid=1eeuzacazd8wwlp1g31jsgppk

4.5Ghz Scores 5693 http://3dmark.com/pcm7/357320

4.6Ghz Scores 5022 (?) http://3dmark.com/pcm7/345885;jsessionid=nlclqud6rk2vj12cgre9znje

4.875Ghz Scored 5368 http://3dmark.com/pcm7/357499

The only logical conclusion I have been able to come up with on my own is that my PSU might be the problem. As I overclock the CPU, it is hogging the power and the GPU is getting less than it needs and thus, not able to perform to the best of its ability?

I am using a Raidmax RX-730SS 730W : that is almost 4 years old. Is this the cause of all my woe?

And if so, will this Corsair HX1050 solve all my problems? :http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139034

Or will I need even more power than that? I will probably never run more than one video card so what ever will power the rig as is is all I'll need.

Alright! Build Photo's!

Unboxing the major upgrades, the i7 3930K, Vertex4 SSD and my D.O.A. ASRock X79 Extreme6!

Got the motherboard in, trying to figure out how to mount the Kuhler 920 with out the Antec bracket. I didn't feel like waiting a week or two for it. All it took was a couple of screws that fit the existing mount on the motherboard, and drilling out the little green plastic doo-dads to size. It was probably easier than using the Antec bracket. I have the screw size needed written down somewhere, if anyone else needs it PM me.

Installing the Vertex4, man I love the Thermaltake Chaser Case, makes everything so easy!

16g of Corsair Vengence RAM

Not the Video Card of my Dreams but it's good enough for now biggrin.gif

Got everything together and it wouldn't boot. Tried everything I could find and messed with it for probably 8-10 hours before some one pointed out to me that my motherboard was DOA. I really didnt want to wait weeks to send this board back and get a new one so I returned it to Newegg and went and picked up the ASUS P9X79 PRO instead. At this point I wasn't really in the mood for taking more photos biggrin.gif

Thanks for looking and thanks for the PSU help in advance!

Did you watch temps while you were running 3DMark? LGA2011 is produces a lot of heat and your sealed unit may not be able to handle it. If the processor is getting too hot, then it'll downclock and that could be where you're losing points. Your PSU should be plenty for your setup, even if it is a little aged.

Yea, the temps are good. 1 hour of OCCT and the hottest it got was 69c
338

With the cooler on extreme mode even at 4.875 the temps didn't break 70c during the Benchmark

PSUs do tend to degrade over time by as much as 10-20%, so it's a possibility. RaidMax has had some serious quality control issues, but if it's run for 4 years I would think you got one of the good ones.

Strange, the 3DMark... No answer to that.
But I know 730W is enough to run it. I myself have the same setup as you (well, with a custom watercooling setup instead of your kuhler and with a 7970 instead of a 570 and a 750W PSU which is about the same as your 730W I suppose) and I run it OC'ed at 4.7GHz just fine, so the PSU can't be the problem there, I think.

And my opinion of the pictures:

LOOOOOVE the sleeving. I've got a few sleeved cables myself (in red, though) love love love it. smile.gifwubsmiley.gif
The only thing I don't really like, and I don't know if it's what you want or not, but it is that there's a blue&red theme. Looks like a curse to me. The blue Corsair Vengeance RAMsticks are - as far as I can remember - the same price as the red ones, and the red 570... too bad, really, could've been an all-out-awesome black&blue build. smile.gif
But nevertheless: nice build. smile.gif

Hmm. Well taking a quick peek at the 3Dmark links, it looks like your 570 is downclocked in the last two. Did it do that automatically? Maybe it just got reset in AfterBurner and then wasn't changed re-OC'd?

If the only thing you have is a 3930K (130W TDP) and a GTX 570 (219 TDP), you'll still have a lot of headroom if your PSU degrades by 10-20%, hell, even 30%. My point being: not to worry, your PSU is fine. smile.gif

But nevertheless: nice build. smile.gif

Thanks, actually if you look in the final build pics, ( http://www.overclock.net/lists/display/view/id/4308599 ) I took the red heatsinks off. I agree about the red, it had to go.

The gtx 570 is still red though frown.gif

Only too bad about the heatsinks, were they blue they would've been awesome. smile.gif
