My Dream Machine, but with an issue, Is my PSU the Problem? - Page 2

Also, I found in my research, that when overclocked at 4.8 at 1.485v this cpu is demanding like 340W alone. Is that totally off?

And according to Sin0822's guide: http://www.overclock.net/t/1189242/sandy-bridge-e-overclocking-guide-walk-through-explanations-and-support-for-all-x79-overclockers

"SBe is a power hog, they said Bulldozer was a power hog, well they must not have foreseen Intel doing the same thing. SBe can pull 350-400 Watts at 4800mhz+ before power conversion of the VRM. That is a lot of watts. I used Corsair AX1200."

Thing is: PSUs above 750W aren't really cheap, so unless you've got the money readily available (in which case I would never mind if you donated it to my own bank account tongue.gif ), I'd first see if it isn't something else. And to me, it seems likely it's not the PSU that's the issue here.

I personally would want quality 800-850W for these chips and a single GPU. I'm normally conservative about PSU choices, but these things are outrageous at full load.

I'm wondering about temps. An H100 can barely contain these things, and they get overpowered at high clocks even. Custom loops get overpowered as well when they don't have anough Rad area.

I think you need to run CPU stress tests and watch temp and CPU speed. Your CPU may be throttling. That screenshot is OCCT at only 4.4GHz. Above 4.6 is where this chip turns into a Watt monster.

I really doubt that 920 is up to the task of cooling a 3930K at 4.87GHz

I'm at work now but I'll watch my temps more carefully when I get home. So far they seem really good. I have a thermal take chaser mk and it has 4 200mm fans, and I have installed/rigged 2 140mm areocool shark fans to blow over the ram and CPU socket and an additional 140 fan bringing cool air in from the bottom of the case too.

If the two 140s are close enough they should take care of the VRM cooling. A side-door fan won't necessarily do the job though, I learned that by experience from a throttling issue with my X6 960T.

Let me know what you find from watching temps/ CPU clocks during OCCT. At 4.8GHz my 3930K hits 85C at times during full loads on a custom loop.

Ok, so this is scary, you might be right about the temp being a problem, what is the CPUTIN and the AUXTIN, how did it get up to 127c, and how can I cool it down?

Also this might (I HOPE) be a glitch... I swear I have never seen a temp anywhere near that and the CPUTIN is 52c and the AUXTIN 33c right now...

screen:
338

***EDITED*** So I shut down CPUID and re-launched it several times and it kept jumping up to 127c (260f) even though I was clocked at 3200 and idle so I rebooted and I am seeing nothing of the sort now. I'll keep an eye on it though. . .

***EDITED*** Of course after I post that everything is fine, BAM 127c again. Faulty Sensor???

Well after much trouble shooting and testing turns out the MoBo has several issues, and the PSU is seriously degraded and not delivering the power it should be. On my way to RMA for the THIRD time... and get a new PSU. Pretty grumpy right about now. Oh to top it off I have a 500G external HD that we use via USB t watch movies, I unplugged it from the TV and when I attached it to my laptop, *buzz-buzz* IT freakin died on me for no apparent reason, and I had all the movies backed up but I deleted it to back up everything I needed for this desktop, so all the data is lost. Hooray!

How are you sure the mobo has issues without having a good PSU to use?

Thread Starter
I was on the phone with Asus tech support for probably about an hour and a half, he found 4 of the temp sensors were defective/malfunctioning. They were reading temps of 180-200+ degrees Celsius. I just took the motherboard back and picked up a new PSU while I was there. I did switch to the Sabertooth, hopefully this will be the last time I have to pull this machine apart.
