Overclocking my Asus 5870v2

Hello guys from o.c.net,

Im from Netherlands so my english grammar shall be bad ,but i try at my best.

I'm trying to overclock my Asus 5870v2 but not work properly .
First my Asus Smartdoctor tool not regonized my Amd catalyst 12.4 driver.
So i find a solution: on Asus site they have vga drivers ,but mine asus 5870 driver was very old.
So i go to 7970 driver and used that vga Asus driver that works aswell with Smartdoctor.
Because i need smartdoctor for voltage tuner.

There are 2 things i can overclock on my Gpu:
-Gpu clock
-Memory clock

I readed some Gpu o.c guides they say:
every gpu is different so it could be that some have with his same gpu higher Gpu clock/low mem and other low Gpu clock and higher mem clock overclock
Must first overclock Gpu clock till what max setting you can find then go further with the mem clock ,otherwise you not know wich of the two make problems.
And if i not get clock stable i can try to voltage increase to get maybe that extra little overclock.

So i started with my Asus 5870v2 (850-1200 default clocks):

Gpu clock 900 Mem clock 1250 i tried before without problems easy.

I started fresh 850 and 1200 ,but i cant get higher clock even with voltage increase then 900-1250 frown.gif
Without getting glitches hehe im not good at all in Gpu overclocken.

Some Questions:
Can i just set voltage tuner from default 1.211 to 1.3 from that find the good setting?
(1.3 is safe they say on many sites for my card if the temps let it be and it do )

A lot of sites they say use Furmark for overclocking your Gpu ,but i think Furmark do a unrealistic amount of heat ,so can i just use a benchmark like Heaven 3?
(to get the same stability test only more realistic then Furmark..)

Do you guys have some tips for me to get higher clock then this low overclock 900-1250 ?

I can overclock my Cpu's always very well on air ,but i think Gpu overclock is way different and a lot more diffecult

Hope someone help me out Greetz Michiel

I'd have to disagree there GPU OC's are easy compared to CPU OCs. Just go into MSI Afterburner or whatever you use and increase the voltages by a notch until you get it stable. thumb.gif

Why they say 1.3 volt is safe zone on my Gpu. If my temps are good when i do 1.35v does it really matter?

I'm not sure with maximum voltages but you should keep it around 1.3 max. If other sites say otherwise then go ahead.

Ok thanks i stay at 1.3 volt.
Dont wanne it dies before december i believe new card come at that date.
Can someone explain how you overclock your gpu?

Download MSI Afterburner
Go into settings -> then select unlock voltage control
Raise GPU Core Clock and stress test until you get artifacts
Raise GPU Voltage by an increment and stress test again
Repeat until you reach desired clock speed

Mem OC's are easy. Just move the slider over (not too far) and your done.

Okay thanks you very much for the explanation.
You use Furmark to test stability? or can i just use Heaven 3.0 bench , i like that benchmark so nice gfx much cooler test then the boring Furmark thumb.gif
Thanks people was mine last question ,go test very soon i let you guys know the results if you wanne know it.

I hope it gonna work tried so many times never worked by higher increament then 50 mhz ,im very happy if it works.
Just take more time to do it.

I personally use 3DMark 11 but yeah Heaven is just as good. Good Luck! thumb.gif

I will pretty much always uses Afterburner as long as the GPU is supported. Asus Smart Doctor is in my experience the worst OC tool out there. With Afterburner OC'ing that card should be as simple as moving a few sliders and adjusting voltage. Good luck with the V2 card I absolutely loved mine but the fan was like a turbine so I eventually moved to watercooling it and my card sat happily at 1.1ghz for benches and games.

So i did today overclocking my GPU i did well and good stable from 850-1200 1.212v to 960-1280 1.299v.
Only i have one problem after reboot smartdoctor set everything to default.
So i thought i know the stable clocks lets putt it in Amd driver and it stays at the overclocking clocks after reboot.
But the voltage in Smartdoctor goes aswell to default thats pretty sad.

I think thats the reason why my overclocking failed before making this topic.
I dont wanne set voltage every time when i log in windows to 1.299 frown.gif .

Then i think there's no way for me to set the overclock and voltage to the right numbers after reboot.
I know MSI afterburner has the future save and startup overclock after reboot , but when i use
my Asus 5870v2 on Msi afterburner tool the program let me not change voltage because its not Msi card (it stays grey unchangeble).

How can i fix this? , this my last question then the topic can be closed.

Thank you guys for answering questions and helping me out!
If you guys now a solution for it im very happy man then we done the job smile.gif
