[Space] Skydiver to Attempt Record-Breaking Supersonic Space Jump

Sponsored by energy drink Red Bull, Austrian extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner, 41, plans to skydive from a balloon in the stratosphere at an altitude of 120,000 feet (36,576 meters).

If he can do it, he'll become the first person to break the sound barrier outside of an aircraft. He'll also break a trio of other records that have stood for more than 50 years: Baumgartner's plunge would mark the highest skydive, the highest manned balloon flight and the longest free fall, at about 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

*Note: I know there was an article in here about this 2 years ago, but I felt that an update would be appropriate, seeing as the project is now back on track.

I think you're right, some guy in 1960 did it. I believe he jumped from 102,000 feet though.

Edit: Nope I was wrong, he achieved 614 miles per hour, not enough to break the sound barrier. His name was Joseph Kittinger.

I actually thought that John Stapp had done it, but I looked it up and he only hit mach .9 in a rocket sled. Although he also did it without any kind of g-suit.

I believe the guy your talking about reached ~620mph which is just short of the speed of sound at that altitude, and pretty far from the speed of sound at sea level.
