Built-in sound card?

Thread Starter
I was looking at the page for Steelseries' Siberia V2 Frost Blue headphones. I noticed they say something about the headphones having an "advanced built-in sound card." Is this possible? How good could it be? And if I were to use it with a sound card in my machine, would there be any improvement over relying on this built-in sound card?

Sorry if these questions seem obvious, I am still very new to the topic of sound cards and audio. redface.gif

Edit: Adjusted for clarity.

I can't exactly find out if it uses a 3.5mm connector or USB for audio. I do know that it uses a USB cable for the LED power and noise canceling stuff. However, if it uses the USB cable for audio, that means it will bypass the soundcard on your computer, rendering it useless while you're using the headset.

My best suggestion is to visit this thread and buy yourself some real headphones.

I've already looked at that thread, and there are too few suggestions for headsets. I'm pretty picky, and none of those fit what I'm looking for. I'm already set on turning these down if they do turn out to use USB for audio, but what I'm wondering about is the possibility and performance of a headset with a built-in sound card.

The performance will be bad. Pure and simple. Particularly with 'gaming' brands. You really are better off with a standard headphone and separate mic. The reason why there are few headset suggestions is that there are very few (cheap) headsets that are actual quality vs. standalone headphones.

Thanks for a straightforward answer.

I'm not committed to buying any headset at the moment, and I'm already aware of the whole "headsets and gaming brands are crap" deal. It's already been made pretty clear in the recommended audio products thread. I'm just frustrated with the lack of a quality headset (or even headphones for that matter) at ANY price that will satisfy my aesthetic desires.

For now, I guess I'll just use the headphones and mic I already have.
