you could attempt to bring the details back in the blown spots on the hat and scarf as im not on a great screen but it looks like the detail isnt completely lost.

really retouching is not needed and usually unnecessary unless you are looking for that fake look you see models in the magazines. you can go over the top like some people do and smooth the skin out and remove all her imperfections.

honestly retouching a photo like this is a waste of time unless she is paying you for a certain look.

the image overall could be greatly improved by either a better background or an all white backdrop and off camera flash that is angled from your model i suggest starting at like 45 degrees similar to basic 3 point lighting

depending on how much room you have to play with you can definitely freely rotate the image to make the image not balanced or straight

Here is my opinion on photoshop: Photoshop will save a bad image but it won't ever be good. But photoshop has the ability to make a good image great. This is why I will always shoot RAW. The ability to transform my image is endless.

In the case of your image (javier), the bottom left of your background is no longer the white shades but the brown wall and as said by others, the hat and scarf are definitely blown out. You can try pumping up the blacks and contrasts to see if you get a more interesting image. I would also try black and white considering the color doesn't really pop.

EDIT

Also, there is a bunch of dead space above her head. This is not really something you want to edit in post but something to think about before the picture is taken.

Good luck on your future shots!

I dissagree with Photoshop saving a bad image.

Photoshop will only make a good image better, a Meh image Meh, and bad images worse. The old adage Gold in Gold out, Garbage in Garbage out.

If you need to know what photoshop can do start looking in to websites like lynda.com watch a bunch of vids and see what you can learn.

Worry about shooting better images so you can consistently get good or better images.

I think I disagree with you and more agree with Elikim.

Photoshop can make good images great for sure. It can make OK images pretty good, and it can make not so great images OK or usable (i.e. save a poor image). I don't think anyone here is saying Photoshop can take a completely unusable image (for whatever reason) and make it fantastic, but that doesn't mean that poor images can't be saved. It more depends on what makes the image poor and whether or not Photoshop is able to help.

The thing that is definitely true is that if you take better images, Photoshop becomes more of a 'finishing' tool, which in many cases in photography, it should be the ideal functionality. That being said, Photoshop can help you during that learning process to save images that aren't so great.

IMO, this is falling in the mindset that everyone thinks Photoshop can fix everything.

It is like saying "I don't need to worry about taking good images, I can just fix that in Photoshop." It is flawed thinking.

Can it recover a blown shot? To a degree it can. I just guess it falls under the what do you consider acceptable.
