R7970 lightning vs R7970 Power edition - Page 3

I use AMD cards, and their drivers are not that bad(from what I heard). It is worse than nvidia and crossfire have issues. But it is completely usable most of the time.
Edit:IMO

I dun mean to be rude, but you're lucky, go on the intertnet, you'll see RAGE you've NEVER seen before when you search for anything AMD driver-related, sir.
And no, I think the OP should REALLY thouroughrly think this through.

I'm not lucky, I'm one of many people who have no problems with AMD cards. I can find you people who have problem with nVidia drivers too, doesn't mean you should never buy one of their cards. That aside, try uninstalling CCC and see if that helps you out at all.

When I look at MSI homepage I spot quite obvious difference when comparing the other two available 7970 cards to the lighting in there. The lighting has 2x DVI 4x DP connectors while the other two have the reference design connection options. So MSI Lighting can run up to 6 screen eyefinity up to 1920x1200 per screen and the other two can not as they are limited to max 4 screens.

Of course there are, every company has a 3% failure rate so it's natural.
That being said, I did uninstall CC and it's still uninstalled.
We can't deny the fact that nVidia > AMD when it comes to drivers...It's a known fact..
If he has the budget, he should get an nVidia.

What makes you think they are different? MSI does not bin chips for your overclocking pleasure. They are graded/binned to hit the advertised clocks at X voltage. This does not mean it will overclock like a golden monster.

Im not super concerned about high overclocking. I was planning on ordering a lightning over the weekend but newegg discontinued it. The PE looks identical and this is one of the few threads i could find comparing the 2 and was asking for some additional info, if it exists.

I've been using nVidia ever since I was a kid and I switched two weeks ago and DAMN...I've been having driver issues, windows lock ups, black random screens(yes I did a fresh install of windows)...And the list goes on and on...Not to mention the Catalyst Control Center, THAT WILL give you blood pressure, one more thing, EVERY program that is 3D-related ON THE PLANET (even photoshop) uses CUDA instead of OpenCL.

My advice?
Get a GTX 670 Power Edition and save 100$ for WAY better overall performance.

One more thing about nVidia is
They will release a very interesting service called nvidia experience
in a nutshell, nvidia took all possible pc builds, and all possible graphic settings in every game available
put them all in a super computer and voila magic!

I've always been an nvidia fan but the drivers with the 600 series have tended to suck more than AMD drivers ever did. I have had an AMD driver issue before, took a little bit of fixing to get it going right, I've had nvidia drivers get corrupted more than once with the 300+ series drivers that had me pulling my hair out to the point of reinstalling windows to be able to use an nvidia card in the rig again.
Looking forward to the Titan, & hoping nvidia keeps the drivers issues straight (no issues with the last couple drivers so far at least).

This. They are binned to run the clock speed on the box, still need luck on your side for a golden card.

As for the PE & lightning differences, I think the main difference would be in the Lightning ln2 bios. Looks like the same PCB & everything else, I haven't tried but I would imagine the lightning ln2 bios can even be flashed onto the PE card.

That is what I am able to gather as well. My lofty OC goals are about 1050-1100. I was more curious about the physical differences and it seems to be that these cards are the same thing with different bios. less maybe some slight difference in binning. thumb.gif

I would rep you but that doesnt seem to be an option.
