I'm actually in a related field. Although not a protein modeler, I am a scientist at a pharmaceutical company. The protein I had worked on during my PhD was Class I Major Histocompatibility Complex, which essentially is part of your immune system that makes you reject an organ transplant. For decades, there was intense debate how the protein could have been folded in order to perform its very unique function. When the 3D structure was finally solved back in the '80s, it turned out to look like a hot dog bun on a flower stalk! I don't think anyone expected that.

It really revolutionized the research in that field. We used to joke that there were two eras in Immunology: pre- Class I MHC crystal, and post- Class I MHC crystal! (This coming from a Class I MHC lab tho! biggrin.gif)
