Is it time to finally go intel?

Thread Starter
So im looking at upgrading my sig-rig at the end of the summer and have a couple of questions regarding what to buy.. Ive always been a bit of an AMD fan, but i have a feeling that might change after i buy my next set of upgrades.

So what im looking to upgrade is
1. CPU/Mobo
2. GPU/s
3. HDD to SSD

And my first question is going to be this. The 3570k, 2500k, or cheaper FX-6100? I know that the 3570k or 2500k will perform better, but would the FX-6100 satisfy my needs? I want to be as cheap as possible.. tongue.gif

Basically, the only thing im going to be doing with the computer is general web browsing, gaming, and word processing. I currently play BF3, SC2, and Skyrim. So would it be worth the extra money for me to get a 2500k or 3570k, just for gaming? Or would i be better off using the money i save to buy a better Motherboard so i can overclock higer?

My second question would be, if i do get the FX 6100, would i need to worry about its ability to handle CFX 7870's? I plan on upgrading to a 7870 after i sell my 6850, and then adding another once prices go down. Probably sometime around Christmas or so.

And third, any cheap 60-64 GB SSD suggestions? I would be looking to set them up in RAID 0..

Thanks for any help guys. thumb.gif

I go with either the 3570k or the 2500k. 2500k you could probably find for cheaper. SC2 loves a nice CPU, so any upgrade would gain you some improvement, though the Intel *may* have a bit more performance to gain. Most of the Z68, P67, Z77 boards OC quite well, and at the very least ok, so that's not really a worry.

Not sure about whether the 6100 would bottleneck anything, got no experience on that. Probably not though, imo.

Crucial M4 128GB is $109 at Newegg. Agility 3 is ok if you want a cheap SSD. Probably not worth RAID0'ing them though. They're fast enough as it is. SSD as boot, HDD as storage. I personally prefer cache drive, giving me some ease of mind. Not that many people go this route though.

I would definitely get a 2500k or a 3750k. SC2 and Skyrim both need heavy cpu power which the fx6100 will struggle with.

You might wanna take a look at this review.

I would worry about it handling 7870's because those are more powerful than gtx 580's and in this review dual 580's are bottlenecked by bulldozer.

SSD's in RAID = dead drives. Don't do it, you're just going to kill them off. I would not put the 3570k into consideration but that's just me. I think 2500k is a better value than the 3570k. Between the 2500k and FX-6100, it depends. The 2500k will give better performance in skyrim and SC2. The question is what resolution will you be playing? 1080p+ resolutions, most of the load will be on the video cards, so the FX-6100 should be ok. The 2500k is priced decently, but what could you buy with the money saved if you go with the FX and would it be worth it? Answer that and you'll know which cpu to go with.

Will probably pick up that SSD.. Thanks for the find. smile.gif

Hmm... Seeing this review makes me wonder, especially considering i would only be getting a 6100.. Im definitely wanting to crossfire in the future.. So i just might have to go intel... I would like to see a few more opinions though..

I play most all of my games at 5760x1080.. So are you saying that a 6100 overclocked would for sure be able to handle cfx 7870s? In that case i may want to go that route...

OP, how big is your budget? I'm sure many of us would be willing to help piece some upgrades together for you.

You'd have to buy a CPU + motherboard, right? $400 should be plenty for that and a decent motherboard. You should have some money spare.

2500k and maybe an Asrock Z77/Z68 board? If you're in Canada, I know NCIX has a warehouse clearance on their old boards (Z68 etc) going for ~$50. They are open box, and that's always a consideration if you're buying from newegg etc. If you want to stretch budget a bit more, see if you can find any Maximus Gene boards Z77/Z68, either is good. But definitely consider the Asrock boards. Great performance for price.

So after looking around, this is what i came up with...

Intel build:

2500k
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

ASRock Mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271

7870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150605

Total : $661.97

AMD Build

FX-6100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103962

ASRock Mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157281

7870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150605

Total: $579.97

Either way, im pushing my budget? So basically it comes down to, is the 2500k worth 80 more dollars?

You could consider delaying the 7870 a bit and waiting till some other cards come out, either dropping the price or offering better value. Though, if for $60 more, I'd say the 2500k is borderline worth it.
