why do we even really care about the units sold? this card is a dam well good one! isn't that the part that matters how well the card performs, instead we are all worried about sales. if you really want one go on newegg around 2:00-3:00 in the day that's when most come in stock, and evga after 5:00, i snagged myn at evga after 5:00 after seeing a thread that tells you when the sites put up there cards, and now when i got onto those two sites at the right time there in stock!

It shows how well Nvidia are doing as a company.

Low sales volume and selling out indicates that they have low stock levels and hints at production issues.

I am guessing they are not getting many good chips for the 680, and the ones that are salvaged are turned into 670s.

Anyway, they need to sort out their 28nm issues. I am a bit suspicious about the degradation over time rumours that were going around too...time will tell i guess

To me, this graph shows that nVidia is having yield issues with 680, not that they are selling better than 580. But without actual units sold, we can't really come to a real conclusion. Though the fact that they are spinning this nonsense the way they are, and refuse to let us know anything about yields and units sold, it makes me believe more that yields are the issue over anything else.

But again, we can't come to that conclusion just yet, but it seems to be the best conclusion to arrive at based on info given.

Agreed.

It makes no difference to me. the 680 is a great card, mid-range or not. I've never seen a mid-range card perform like this. Ever.

..and if you really want one, do as kole208 has suggested.

Yes, that is kind of the point of Moore's Law...

This may be true; however, this news seems to be geared towards Nvidia's shareholders. Though it feels a bit like sensationalism, the graph/article is right about one thing: I'm having a tougher time finding these cards in stores vs. the GTX 580 tongue.gif. However, I'm still waiting for GK110 chips to drop before I retire these GTX 275s of mine

YES! Someone that gets it biggrin.gif. Sadly, Moore's Law is becoming harder to uphold whether of physical limitations or lack of competition.

I knew better than most that GK104 was derived from GF104/114 and wasn't a true successor to GF100/110, but the correlating performance from last gen to this gen took a pretty big leap as these would have been some of the fastest "midrange' parts ever had nVidia labeled and priced them as GTX660s.
We skipped a fab process too. GF110 to GK104 was 40nm to 28nm; the fact is, we were getting stagnated growth in the GPU department prior to Kepler and Tahiti, and AMD/nV decided to take advantage of this. AMD used it to solidify their GPGPU/compute presence without taking (what would otherwise appear to be) a hit to performance; nV used it to soak up huge profit margins by selling midrange gaming as highend gaming.

Both companies are on my ****list right now. I won't buy this generation.

Indeed.

My point, more or less though is as enthusiasts, sometimes I think we miss the forest for the trees. It's interesting to talk about the technical aspects of whatever topic; I do it as well. However, at the end of the day, I'm in pursuit of performance. The 680 is the fastest, single card, single gpu out there. There's always something new and better around the corner in this business. You could be waiting to buy forever if you never 'pull the trigger'. Who cares what the sales numbers are. Who cares if it's "mid-range". "What does it do for you?" and "does it fill your needs?" are more important questions to me.

That's just me though.

I'm not totally convinced the 680 is actually faster then the 7970. After owning a 670 it's clear to me why Nvidia does so well in reviews. The published stock boost numbers aren't actually right and each individual card will boost itself to a different level. In other words there are many 670/680 reviews out there with cards that boost to 1200mhz but the results are still considered 'stock'. My card does 1050 for example out of the box. Not high but better then the published 980 number. For this reason the only numbers that are really a legitimate comparison are ones where both cards are OCd.

That little digression aside Lancer I agree with you in principle. This 670 that I own regardless of what it was intended to be in early production is an excellent GPU. 95% of the top cards performance in a card that doesn't break 65 degrees in a microatx case when overclocked to the max? Yes please sign me up for that card immediately. I'm going to be playing Max Payne 3 in 24 hours totally maxed in an air cooled PC I can't hear when it's running. It's a great piece of equipment. GK100/104 call it whatever you want. If it performs right I'm there.
