Or do you prefer lower clock for daily usage?
Btw I just get up to 4.8GHz 1.38v for daily biggrin.gif still testing if it stable or not, I don't use Prime95 because it will generate too much heat for my H110, just gaming and 3Dmark benchmarking also cinebench ^_^ Btw here my 5GHz but only little test like Firestrike, unfortunately I don't have higher RAM speed, stock is 1600MHz but at 5GHz I use 1333MHz instead ^_^
Capture.jpg
The weird thing is : I just let CPU PLL on "Auto", if I let it "Enabled" then it will become unstable and I can't get boot to desktop at 5GHz.
Vccsa on auto (0,90v), CPU IO on auto (1.040v) and PLL on auto too (1.76v).

Have 5 GHz for most of the time of computer use but with offset voltage in BIOS and speedstep option enabled. So at idle CPU run at 1.2 GHz and 1.0V VCore. Unfortunatly don't have X79A-GD65 so I can't comment on PLL auto setting. I have my PLL on 1.65 V

It's OK hcn, wow your PLL is lower than mine, btw so you use 2x4G RAM 1600MHz right? I wonder is there a quite big difference with quad channel instead dual channel, no problem with OC right?
Because I think I'm gonna buy 2x4G 2400MHz Gskill TridentX...or not, still managing my money to buy PC hardwares biggrin.gif

It really comes down on what you use the system for the most.
Quad channel can be a lot faster. Or not at all.

I assume that is easier to OC with dual channel instead quad. The IMC has less work with dual channel configuration.

True.
Same goes for dual channel boards when you look at 2 vs 4 memory banks.

Yeah you're right hcn smile.gif less RAM stick means less stressing on IMC.

Gaming, not so (if at all).
Benchmarks, definitive difference.

Four years after the first post on this topic I again tried to reproduce CPU overclock result referred to in the title . My current hardware configuration is slightly different from that of year 2012 and later. Instead P9X79 or RIVE motherboard with 8 Gb dual channel RAM I now have a RIVE Black Edition board with 16 Gb quad channel RAM configuration. Also, the current 3930K sample requires a significantly higher voltage to achieve Prime95 stability at 5 GHz compared to the sample from 2012. As for water cooling setup , three 420 mm radiators and one 360 mm radiator are dedicated to cool CPU and VRM water blocks . Total radiator surface was cooled with 9 Yate Loon 140mm fans at 2200 rpm and 3 Scythe Ultra Kaze 120 mm fans at 3000 rpm ( all set to maximum rpm ) during Prime95 session. The whole stability test was conducted with Prime95 v27.9 application on custom setting for 10 minutes per FFT value and at high ambient values ( 26 - 27 C ). As you can see at enclosed pictures the system was stable for a little more than 12 hours ( session stopped manually after that ) at 5 GHz and with all 12 threads active. With robust cooling setup air/water delta topped at 4-5C with water temperature at 31-32C. Maximum CPU core temperature peaked at 84C and 3 cores were under 80C. The whole system drew 650 - 750W from the wall ( measured with Kill A Watt ). CPU VCore fluctuated between 1.55 - 1.57V during load.
