[Verge] Microsoft reportedly working to block apps that re-enable the Windows 8 Start button - Page 13

I wish they got rid of ALL the classic desktop altogether.

Why not make the whole OS in the Metro style? Like, converting the desktop into a mosaic where tiles are your folders/shortcuts or whatnot.

I agree with you on that, there's no reason whatsoever to remove the start button, even if you're on a tablet the start button would still have been useful even if it was just there to refer the user to the Metro menu.

I also do not get why MS refuses to make 2 separate OS for tablet & dekstop/laptop like Apple did.
MS made a separate one for mobile phones (which looks and functions great btw) so they are capable of it. Just lazy as fnekr.

I am kind of hoping that Win 9 will feature a separate desktop/laptop version.

Sadly the sheep will buy into this too, praising it on how it is "good" for users, preventing users from "damaging their os" or some other crap that they spew whenever a company makes a decision "in their best interest" rolleyes.gif
But this is the final nail in the coffin...
I mean, don't get me wrong... I'm all for a faster more streamlined OS, but when you take away my choice in the matter over what I'm buying... well... I'm not going to buy it.

Hope you mean that as you can damn well expect MS and Apple will be following this modus operandi from here forward.

By the way...Linux says hi and welcome to the club if you truly meant what you said about wanting a faster, more streamlined OS that doesn't take away your choices. thumb.gif

Honestly, I'm kind of hoping MS keeps this going...maybe they'll get the touchscreen to actually have a purpose on a desktop.

Meh. I spent 5 minutes the w8/metro and I got used to the lack of start button.

People have been trained for so long to use the mouse. Windows 8 abandons mouse usage. People are going to have to use the keyboard more like DOS. You are better off using an Xbox 360 controller than a mouse to use Windows 8.

I completely understand this. I'm somewhat disappointed a metro being shoehorned into Windows 8, but that does not make the ENTIRE OS complete crap. Ignoring the metro start page for a few seconds (trust me, it won't hurt as much as you might think), Windows 8 is better than Windows 7 in almost every way.

The automatic response on OCN to every Windows 8 thread has become "No Start Menu = no buy." Which is looking to be the new thing where people pout and say "No [insert PC game feature] = no buy" yet end up buying it anyway.

I'm glad. thumb.gif

The more people that use it the more that will be actually voicing their opinions as to what they want from an OS. MS isn't going to listen to people who "skip" Win8 (probably because most will eventually cave in). I know I'm tempted by it sometimes just because I love screwing around with new things but I'm still upset that MS broke their promise about getting a better FS than the archaic NTFS and seem to have done nothing more than essentially made everyone pay for a kernel update and not a kernel change of significance. People are all upset about the surface level thing when they really should be upset about another Vista SP with a different name.

MS and Apple work under the assumption you don't know anything about computers or don't have the time to control things yourself and therefore are trying to make it as "simple" as possible. You're not just paying money for software; you're paying your freedom and control in return for something that "just works". There's nothing wrong with it. If you don't agree with the "price" then make it clear by not paying and moving onto something else.
As I've said before there seems to be a lot of hate at MS and Apple for doing things that take away control but people keep paying. If you were really upset you'd move to another OS/software. I get tired of people complaining and not doing anything about it even if it's something as small as sending a direct complaint to the company or not buying(though most importantly NOT USING) their software.
PS: I'm sure hoping for the people on here going "cool I'll stick to Win7 for the next ten years" you guys get lucky and MS doesn't start cutting out the support and denying software for it to make you guys upgrade because I'm pretty sure if they did most of you would. Or on the flip side you may not be able to use your latest and greatest hardware without going to Win8. I don't think MS is that "bad" but they definitely could if they wanted to.

Does "got consumer by the balls" mean anything to you?

Pretty much the ONLY reason we play with M$ is that they are the "de facto standard" in the majority of PC operating systems. No other O/S has the same level of support when considering 3rd party offerings... and M$ knows this.

They will continue to yank our chains and drain our wallets forcing working products to become obsolete (due to termination of support for those products) in their push to continue marketing their wares. Honestly, as a consumer, I'm virtually uninterested in all the "new changes" they are making to the O/S. I just want my O/S to run the software that I currently run and be secure enough where I don't have to worry about being hacked and turned inside out. That shouldn't be too much to ask for.

Maybe M$ should just change their model to being "subscription based"... since they are determined to wring as much cash as they can from us anyways. Treating the O/S the same as any other application is ludicrous... as everything depends on the O/S. Some of us don't want all those "extra features" and GUI ... we just want FUNCTIONALITY. But yet, corporate interests supercede the wishes and wills of the consumer... yet, if we could build something functional and supported ourselves, we would... but we can't and will be forever enslaved to the whim and will of this company. Continuously forcing us to swallow product that we didn't ask for and don't even want.

But such is corporate greed isn't it? If only there were other truly viable options considering the support of all 3rd party software out there. We'd definitely vote with our dollars if that were the case... but as such the only vote we get is to hang on to what we got until the product lifecyle has completely ended and then make a final decision.

I for one will not be an early adopter of anything Windows 8 based on what they are presenting now. If they want any more of my money, they are gonna have to wait for it.... and who knows, by then there might be another options. /shrug

MS made a separate one for mobile phones (which looks and functions great btw) so they are capable of it. Just lazy as fnekr.

Economics....

It would cost them more to do it this way... plus considering the backlash of the folks like me who won't support it either way, they would rather pull us along kicking and screaming rather than targetting their software to those who actually want it (at the additional cost of hiring more staff to support 2 different versions of the software).

In the end.. it's all about the money. Honestly, you probably already knew that. smile.gif
