[Verge] Microsoft reportedly working to block apps that re-enable the Windows 8 Start button - Page 4

Me too, functionality has gone up too.

Granted the new start menu is odd at first and certainly requires getting used to but all the other stuff was improved.

It's the little things, auto-colourization, speed graphs with file transfers, proper out of the box ssd support, sata 3 and usb 3 out of the box, MSE out of the box, flash, fast boot, etc etc.

It's very good actually but if people can't look past their only concern 'the start menu' then fine, keep using Win 7 and wait for Win 9.

This seems stupid. If you use your money and purchase something you should be able to use that something however you like, it shouldn't be limited.

Plus less people will now buy windows 8 knowing they can't have their start button.

But.... why.

If people are willing to pay you for your OS, provided that they can access some old code from Win 7, why not let them?

Oh well, the only way I'd get win 8 is if it were on a tablet. Looks horrible for desktops / laptops.

I'll be sticking with Windows 7 and skip 8 as I did with XP and skipping over Vista. I can see metro working really well on a tablet but it doesn't look good on a desktop to me

^You guys do understand the license terms and the fact that as far as most of the world is concerned you don't actually own software/programs. MS and Apple work under the assumption you don't know anything about computers or don't have the time to control things yourself and therefore are trying to make it as "simple" as possible. You're not just paying money for software; you're paying your freedom and control in return for something that "just works". There's nothing wrong with it. If you don't agree with the "price" then make it clear by not paying and moving onto something else.

As I've said before there seems to be a lot of hate at MS and Apple for doing things that take away control but people keep paying. If you were really upset you'd move to another OS/software. I get tired of people complaining and not doing anything about it even if it's something as small as sending a direct complaint to the company or not buying(though most importantly NOT USING) their software.

PS: I'm sure hoping for the people on here going "cool I'll stick to Win7 for the next ten years" you guys get lucky and MS doesn't start cutting out the support and denying software for it to make you guys upgrade because I'm pretty sure if they did most of you would. Or on the flip side you may not be able to use your latest and greatest hardware without going to Win8. I don't think MS is that "bad" but they definitely could if they wanted to.

Is it just me, or do new OS's seem like far less of an "upgrade" than in versions past. It just seems they do a little tweaking and add a few feature or 2. It really feels like every 2nd OS these days are just a dressed up service Pack looking to take our money... Which is why, like many, I now upgrade every second OS. Vista brought us some good stuff, but it was done poorly. Win7 is just a proper Vista with some tweaks really. I suspect that Win8 will bring lots of new features, mainly for integration with mobile/touch devices. Little reason for most desktop users to switch it seems. Win9 will just be a proper Win8 and it will be useable right out of the box. That my thoughts on it right now.

But yea. Are we not at a time now where we don't need a completely new OS every few years? I mean, unless something drastically changes, I see no reason why they can't simply update Win7 for a long time now. Theres nothing wrong with it, its not buggy and full of holes. Oh wait, MS wouldn't make truck loads of cash selling us the same old same old with new bells and whistles... forgot that.

Win7 for the next many, many years for me.

I disagree. At least Intel's products are fully serviceable during the tick. Microsoft has an every other OS strategy. The people in the middle get hosed. Vista wasn't quite as horrible as some believed IMO, but the trouble was it required a lot of hardware for the time for little added functionality outside of DX10 and 64 bit support, we just won't go there with WinXP x64. And DX10 and 64 bit support weren't important to very many users, OEM's were still shipping boxes with 1-2GB of ram.

Windows 8 will probably be seen as a flop to a lot of desktop users. A new UI is a daunting task to a lot of people. If they think the transition to Vista/7 was bad, let them go to Win8 and see how bad it gets. If Apple was smart (which they aren't), they would get out of the hardware business and allow end users to purchase their OS. They could have cleaned up on Vista, and they probably could clean up on Win8. Again, a lot of people don't give a crap about a lot of crap. They want office productivity and a web browser and that's it.

Thank heavens I run Linux. I'll just keep Win7 Pro x64 as my secondary OS for games as usual. Lets see if Win9 is any better.
Removing Legacy code is fine but dunno why they would choose to force users to use Metro. That just seems like a stupid decision, even OS's like Vista/7 supported the 'classic' XP UI. And other than the UI overhaul exactly what is Win8 bringing to the table, some optimized scheduling and lighter resouce usage? I'm not sold on this.
