Hey nice build. If you haven't opened the ram yet, I'd suggest returning it. Derick's guide is out of date thumb.gif

You'll be much better off with 1600 cl8 ram such as THIS. They also sell it in single sticks HERE if they run out of the 2 stick packs.

It won't make sense now, and you'll say "but the boards and chips only support 1333 ram." Trust me, they'll take 1600 too, and you''ll see a boost in performance.

But seriously, all of the information and builds that I've seen have used only 1333 ram so this is new information to me too. I haven't opened any of them yet so I supposed I could return them....would have to pay for shipping and the 15% restocking fee. Plus, it would delay this build for another week since I really can only work on this on the weekends. So I guess my real question is, how much of a boost in performance are we talking about? Is it really enough to warrant the $50 or so it will cost and the delay? If it really is then I could actually just order the new ram now and then send back this ram on Monday, so at least I'll have it sooner.

Hmm....also every time I've asked Newegg to drop the restocking fee they have so I could ask about that again. That would save me $36. I wonder if they are getting sick of me yet smile.gif

So if I understand correctly, you have linked me to dual channel sets so I would just run two dual channel sets per processor instead of one quad channel set? Is that a problem at all? Also, to get 1600 I am assuming is only possible with the modified bios, correct?

Thanks for the info, G3RG. I really appreciate it. This is exactly the kind of stuff that I was hoping to flush out by doing a build log like this.

Oh and +rep to everyone helping me. Just wanted to say thanks already, even though I'm sure there will be more questions.

So I guess for now I will hold off while I try to come to a conclusion on this issue.

I have both types of DDR running but the two systems are not apples-to-apples otherwise.
My "experience" right now, with no actual data to back it up other than observations, is that the difference with 6128s is minimal.
So I would say it's up to you. I would just get it running since you are this close.
Save that money to eventually upgrade the CPUs. That's where you will get the biggest bang for an upgrade anyway IMO.
And yes, the only way to take advantage of the faster ram is to be running the OC BIOS update.

What about the boards that do support 1600MHz ram, do the chips support it? The 6174/6274s for instance.
