Preparing the case for fitting the Phobya 400mm Radiator.

First off, don't do this if you aren't comfortable completely cutting your case up to make something fit. There's been only a few others who have done this on OCN due to the amount of cutting and a number of people will tell you that your case will wobble around, collapse, fall apart if you cut it, whatever.

Get the right tools...
I went out to Harbor Freight because I'm mainly a cheap bastard and dont see the need in dropping hundreds for something I can get for 1/3 of the price and still comes with a lifetime warranty smile.gif
What I used:
  • A drill with a 1/8" bit to remove the rivets
  • Rivet tool with assortment of rivets(to re-rivet and stabilize whatever you remove) $4.99
  • Dremel (plug in preffered) with metal cutting blades and a de-burring/grinding attachment 29.99 (sometimes on sale for 19.99)
  • 1.5" Dremel Metal cutting blades (get a small pack of thin cut ones too)
  • Screwdrivers
  • Black Spray paint
  • Some type of safety goggle (don't forget this, there will be times you will have sparks flying all around you when cutting at odd angles and you only get two eyes. You can get a pair from Home Depot for $2.99

I began by removing all the fans and anything that could be considered an attachment to the case: Images (Click to show)

The Phobya 400mm Radiator is already huge, we know this. Here's some pics of sizing it up to see just how large it is and what we are trying to stuff between the rails of the HAF-X: Images (Click to show)

Here's the answer everyone is asking about fitting a 400mm Phobya in the top of the HAF-X:
  1. You ARE going to have to cut the top 5.25" bay out of your HAF-X, it's a fact of life for this mod, you will get over it when you see sparks fly.
  2. You will cut some of the case support from the hard drive bay out in order to get it to work. The rails on the very top are 18mm too far in to allow for you to fit it.
  3. If you are going to be adding additional 200mm fans for a push/pull config, you ARE going to have to cut more out of the case.

Cutting up the HAF-X for the Phobya 400mm: Images (Click to show)

Now, to answer the wobbly case question that has been asked before. Once you start stuffing the case full of the 5.25" components (your DVD-Writer, Reservoir, Fan Controller, Thermal Monitors) your case will be stable again, it's not going to be like you are moving around a bowl of Jello.

To ensure that I still had maximum support on the case, I chose to re-rivet those rivets I had popped out and additionally added a few. The primary weak point you should consider reinforcing is the point where the motherboard tray meets up with the bay cage and the area on the front of the case where the existing two rivets are for the cage mount. Reinforcing this will give a bit more stability.

To clean up, when you are done with re-riveting and cutting, spray the rivets and areas you cut with a light coat from a distance similar to the above instructions on painting the radiator. It will give it a nice finished look: Images (Click to show)

Next up will be installing a finishing edge to the cut bay, installing the fill port, installing the Phobya 400 with push/pull ffans, and putting the fans back on the frame of the HAF-X. Stay tuned!

Happy Modding!

Weekend wrap up:
  1. Barbs fitted into the Phobya 1260, Phobya 400, Danger Den CPU water block.
  2. 4x 200mm fans mounted to the 1260 with the plate installed, this thing is huge!
  3. Added barbs and LED's to the Phobya 5.25" Bay Reservoir
  4. Tried to mount the fans to the RX480 Radiator but the 6-32x40mm screws are too short! Gonna have to get ingenous with the screw lengths. Afraid a 45mm would be way too long.
  5. Finished testing my method with sleeving an old PS just to get comfortable with it. Going to start sleeving the SPH 1300w this week. Stay
tuned for more pics!

JabTech order placed today:
10 more DD 1/2" barbs for the un-accounted for stuff for the watercooling parts.
Purchased a few things for the power supply mod as well.

Still have a couple of other things to purchase. More to come. Tonight is an auto maintenance night so I'm hoping to squeeze in some mods. Pics to come.

Project Halcyon is going to be on hold for just a bit. Not for financial reasons at all, rather it is due to the newly developed Mrs. Halcyon decided she wanted to build a house and our house has to go on the market. The Real Estate agent came by over the weekend and gave us a huge honey-do list of things needing to be done over the next few weeks, thus my attention has been diverted.

Project Halcyon will commence soon, just wanted to let you know the current state of the project.

build isn't being abandoned at all. I'm pretty bummed I can't crank it out quicker, but the housing market requires us to get the house up for sale ASAP. So, there's a ton of painting and moving stuff to storage for the moment and requires my attention. I'm thinking three weeks and I should be able to get back to the fun of building.

Estimating 2 more weeks and I begin work on Project Halcyon again. It's like going through withdrawals, we put the house on the market after a month of doing painting and updates. Exterior painting needs to be completed and then fence and it's been hard not to delve into the build. I am so wanting to finish this beast! Hoping to have it going in the next 2 weeks!
Stay tuned!
