[Microsoft] Download Windows 8 Release Preview ( RC ). - Page 6

I attempted to install the 64 bit version in VMWare Player, but I kept getting CD Key errors. I'm trying 32 bit. Can someone post a CD key that worked for them?

EDIT: Nevermind, I think I was using a key from Consumer preview, or whatever the older version is called. Im installing it now.

Make sure you are not using the OS install Wizard. That is likely not supported yet. Do this instead:

401

Then add the ISO image later and manually install the key after the OS is installed.

Okay, so how do I see the regular desktop? I can't find out how to get out of metro

EDIT: Oh, wow. I feel stupid. There is a button that says desktop....

EDIT2: I have another question. I want to set the resolution of the virtual monitor to 1600x900, but It isn't in the resolution list. I've attempted to change the maximum resolution in VMWare, but it only restricts the available resolutions. How can I add a custom resolution?

My problem with windows 8 is not just lack of one button. Sure I could live with that.
My problem is that desktop is getting replaced with metro ui. Sure, you can still click on the desktop when windows starts, but that just seems stupid.
My bigest problem is that windows 8 can't start in desktop mode, atleast I didn't find the way to set that up. Thats much bigger problem then lack of start button

-These apps are weak, I don't know why a desktop user would want to run by default, some of the dinky apps in full screen on large monitors . You have to go that extra step to move it.

-Grabbing to "throw" an app away (close) sucks when you have a multi monitor setup where the monitor is on top of the main screen. Would it have been that hard to put a X on the apps, with that cutesy metro Circle around it to close apps?

+Taskbar on 2nd monitor, first nice thing I've seen.

-Scaling and side scrolling of apps like the store just feels bad. I thought ok, they want touchscreen, so I tried to grab the background and move it with a mouse click + drag, no, they want the mouse scroll wheel.

I suppose having the magic box pop up where the start button is has the same functionality as the start button.

Just one step closer to idiocracy coming true :-)

edit:

Oh, and whats the deal with all the Microsoft integration? Sure, you can use whatever browser you wish, but all these apps by default use Microsoft online services. Has there been an announcement that google, etc will have the same functionality? Or will there be a pile of half baked user apps, that are mostly broken, on my desktop like on android phones?

I found it a bit hard to use, for example, you could just have an X button pop up when you right click when in an app to close the app, but you have to all way to the left, slide the mouse, and then middle click it. Unless I'm missing some better way...
Which leads to my next point... It isn't intuitive enough in my opinion. I took a while to find some stuff, which in my opinion should never or almost never happen, functionality should be minimally exposed to the user.
Also, I found it a bit inconsistent. What I mean is, a lot of system settings can't be changed through the Metro UI. For example, to change the mouse sensitivity, you have to open the apps menu, and then find and open the control panel, which will open in the old Windows desktop, and it's just annoying settings like these can't be changed from Metro itself. And then the user will have to keep switching back and forth between Metro and the regular desktop, especially if the user has lots of non-Metro programs installed.
However, to be fair, it does seem faster and smoother than Windows 7, which I like. However I didn't test it enough to have a final opinion about perfomance, and the only thing I had installed besides what comes by default was Chrome.
So far, I really tried to adapt to Windows 8, I tried not to hate on it, at least until I gave it a try by myself, but I'm not liking it so far. I really would like to use it, since I love having the latest and greatest, even if it requires me to adapt to it, but in my opinion it's just an inconvenient OS, and I can work a lot faster on Windows 7.

Ty for reminding me of that. So far that is my only real dissapointment to the OS is how you close Apps. they need to put an X in the corner or something to close them. It is a bit of a pain in the butt to close them now.

Other than that i am loving windows 8 after i stopped being so closed minded and gave it a shot.

Very stable and FAST so far.
