Computer locks up after a while no matter what I'm doing.

Hey, my computer is about 1 year old and the 7970 I got near its release. But recently Ive been having my computer compely lock up and stall.

I reseated my ram, and updated my graphics drivers but it keeps locking up. I've also switched my page file to my hard disk because I only had 3.5gbs onmy ssd. its very weird because most of the time the mouse is still working but all my windows are non responsive and I cant bring up task manager and the start menu is completely dead. I thought it was because of google chrome, so I download Firefox. No dice. And to further test what going on I restated my computer and just let it chill, not doing any thing, but I will come back an hour later and everything will be unresponsive and locked up, and ill have an hourglass cursor.

what else can I try or do to fix this?

Edit:
just downloaded and installed. I restarted and was browsing the internet and my taskbar and my icons disappeared. then my computer just shut off and failed to start:

File: \windows\system32\winload.exe

status: 0xc000000e

info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

that doesnt sound good.

edit: computer will not start now give the same error code.

Have you tested by using a spare hard drive to do a clean install of Windows? If you can reproduce the issue on a clean install it's likely a hardware issue.

No I have not, I was hoping not to have to do a fresh install, but I will try to load windows off of a different hard drive.

Download the 12.6 BETA driver for your 7970. This exact fix is in the 12.6 release. If you can bare it out or roll back to a previous good driver, and wait for the official release, do that.

Sounds like a problem with the registry or a certain driver or program. You may well have to do a fresh install,or you could carefully go through all your drivers for devices one by one and try and eliminate,or roll back drivers completely to the ones you first used and start again. Also check for any suspicious processes that are running,if your computer is not responding to allow this try booting in safe mode.

Trying using a different drive, your SSD might be dying.

The error code can mean hardware issues/failure but this also comes up when CPU is running too hot. Might be worth checking.
