2x 7970 vs 680s overclocked - Page 3

Alright everyone, thanks for all the input -- I decied to run GTX 680's sli. I grabbed 2x EVGA GTX 680's Superclocked Signature editions.

What I went for was a an EVGA with a Red/White/Black theme.

Full build will be as follows:

Switch 810
2x EVGA GTX 680's Signature SuperClocked edition
i7 2700k
EVGA P67 FTW
Corsair AX1200
Corsair Vengeance 16gb 1600mhz
DVD drive of course
A Rosewell tool kit (since i don't have any anymore)

$2200 exactly -- I dropped the price from the motherboard and the ram alone to what I wanted to spend vs the 7970's.

What changed was the 2x 7970's, the Asus Maximus IV and GSkill RipJaws 1866 ram (16gb as well).
What I "lost" I felt is insignificant to the resalebility in the future for the EVGA cards and the a couple other minor reasons

Ultimately my decision came from 2 main areas: How the computer is going to look once built (I'm a sucker for eye candy and aethetics) I'll be watercooling with a red theme and I haven't had Sli for a very long time so I'll test this "Smoothness" and let you all know soon enough vs what it really does against the 7970's I had. If I can tell, I'll rock the Sli for now on. I highly doubt I will though.

Thanks for everyones input!

Well because paypL likes to lock accounts if it's large purchases, I had to revise my build since the signature cards went out of stock.

I bought the regular super clocked cards instead.... Looks like a more black white theme with a little red now frown.gif

Why a I7 2700k? Why not a 3770k with ASROCK FATAL1TY Z77 PROFESSIONAL?

Because 3770k is more expensive, and only up to 5% faster. SB also clocks better.

This and it runs hotter doesn't clock as good, it's not binned as high ad te 2700k and I will never buy an asrock

Also, I won't need the VRAM on the 7970s for a while, when I do or of if I do down the rOad, i will of upgraded by then. I upgrade every generation thumb.gif

After coming from a world of 1gb and 2gb vram bottlenecks, I will always tell you to get the card with more vram. Especially since the performance and price + more vram.

This is not true, lets say, if we were comparing a 560ti 1gb vs 450 2gb though.

More to the point. It really only matters depending on your needs. I play games on eyefinity with uber+ mods that NEED VRAM. Such as skyrim, stalker, etc....

If you move at 3x1 eyefinity/surround this will go up.

I am positive that you will not play at 1080p. Either get 3 gb 7970 or 4 gb 680.

Pretty much they are equal. But I would not spend 1000$ for dual gpu for lower than 3 gb. I am not changing setups every 6 months so i can expect some nice games come.

If you want to play only at 1080p just get a 78750/70 or gtx660

Yep, a 3770K and a couple of gtx670s would be a fine choice. You'd probably bench higher with this set up than compared to two 680s and a 2700k. The 670s are that good!

Oh the computer pruchasing dilemma!tongue.gif
