Help me build a rig for 3d graphics

Thread Starter
Hi,

It's been a while since i've assembled my last rig, and even a year since i was working on a desktop machine.

I need to assemble a new rig to do 3d graphics (mostly renderings) so i'm thinking of building one myself, single cpu, instead of going for something exotic.

Back in 2007 i did two q6600 and overclocked them, and they've been working great. I've lost touch with hardware since.

This is the only 6 core cpu i could find:

i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E

These two popped up at a great discount, i wasn't looking deeper, but i'd raid two SSD drives if that makes sense?

Patriot Pyro SE PPSE120GS25SSDR 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

No preference here, just something that can do the trick:

ASRock X79 Extreme6/GB

This probably doesnt make a lot of sense for OC? i'm just surprised that you can get 64gb of ram this cheap.

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

This case looks kinda cool, and i like how accessible it is with both panels opening.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156078]RAIDMAX SMILODON Extreme Black ATX-612WEB

What about these corsair water cooling systems? Seems pretty cheap, but not sure how well it works.

I'd save on a video card for now, and get whatever.

I'd like to OC as much as possible, but keep it stable for 24/7 and renderings.

You have some serious budget it seems.

580$ 3930K
270$ ASRock X79 Extreme6/GB
500$ G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 64GB

Thats $1350 on the motherboard, CPU and memory alone.

To put things into perspective:
540$: 2x AMD Opteron 6128 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819105266
430$: ASUS KGPE-D16 SSI EEB 3.61 Server Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131643
400$: G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231508
This is 20$ more and although I have little experience with dual opterons, I do believe this gives more punch then a single high end i7.
And as 3D rendering members of OCN say: "More Cores!" So get 16 instead of 4 smile.gif

This is quite correct. Though that 2.0Ghz Opteron is from the previous generation and has only 8 cores. The 12 core 6234 part would be well worth the extra $150 per chip. Also with that setup you would want to run 1600mhz ram:

64G Corsair 8x8G @1600 ($199.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233263

2 X Opteron 6234 @ 2.4Ghz ($399.99 X 2)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113030

ASUS KGPE-D16 SSI EEB 3.61 Server Motherboard ($429.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131643

Total = $1629.95

If you're looking in that price range and you only want to use it for rendering this is a tough one to beat. There is a 16 core chip in that same Opteron line, but Xeons become interesting once you get to that price point. Dual quad channel 1600mhz memory controllers provide amazing bandwidth either way.

If you are looking for a more versitile (IE "I want to play games on it over the weekend") build, the Sandy-E 6 core 12 thread platform would be your best bet. I went for the LGA2011 platform myself, but much of what I do is web work, so my rendering is not terribly demanding. Budget constraints have also been a factor keeping 6 core out of my reach (for now...).

Whoa 24 cores. I can only imagine how badass that will render.
I'm already surprised at the power of my i7-2600 tongue.gif (I don't need to render often, since I'm in the game development)

I only now read the line "single cpu, instead of going for something exotic."
If you want to remain mainstream, you can't go any further then the expensive i7's as you suggested in your OP.
But money wise you need to consider a dual socket system. Most certainly since rendering is such a wonderful parallel process.

[Edit] 200$ for 64GB of Vengeance memory? I remember buying my 16GB late last year for 90€. The prices dropped even more, insane. (I love them btw, it's good stuff.)

Hm.. you are both quoting the ram price wrong, it's at least double that (so 400-500 for 64gb?).

I got burned once by trying to assemble a dual socket rig when there were dual core opterons around (possibly even single), i lived in Serbia at the time, and hit a snag when trying to obtain memory, ECC at the time, cost a small fortune. Then came a 939 opteron that was like a fraction of the cost and much faster, and then came the q6600 which was like half the price of the opteron that i had.

So with a dual socket rig, it seems i have to go with amd, to keep it in this price range?

Also when the first 2 x quad cores came out, i remember their performance dropped significantly, it was only about 50% faster than a quad if i remember, so overclocking a q6600 at a fraction of the cost was the best solution.

The only reason why i looked at 3930k is because it was the only 6core that i found. There is an upside to having a really fast cpu with less cores, when you model, or do anything CPU intensive other than rendering, you are using a single core most of the time.

I guess i'm looking for the most bang for the buck, it could be on the more budget side of things, as in something less high end than a 3930k, or maybe on the more exotic side of things, there is a dual socket rig that would be three times as fast, for double the price or something?

honestly, IMO, if your gonna spend that kind of cash on a rig for rendering you should probably check out boxxtech.com

They have a new rig with a tesla card and a fermi so you can render and work at the same time, i7 cpu, 16 gigs of ram for just over 3 grand. Plus you get there 3 year no questions asked warranty,(next day air on all parts, awesome!!!!!) Say you blow the cpu or anything; it's covered for three years straight with them. Peace of mind if it's a rig for work and should be dependable.

They can also set you up with a render boxx . It's a dedicated render solution. I have two for my office needs; they are a little pricey but well worth it if you ask me.

Here's a link to the promo they sent me:

Depending on what software you use for rendering, making use of a couple video cards is far more effective than dropping cash on a better CPU. For applications that support CUDA, get a couple GTX 670's (or 680/690 is you can afford) in SLI and they will dance circles around your CPU, grow up, have children, die of old age, and be reborn again before the CPU looked both ways to cross the road.

If you don't want to do your own custom water cooled setup, then I'd suggest getting an H100 as long as the case supports it. My preference for a good budget case would be the NZXT Switch 810, but that's just a personal preference.

It will not support SLI and 670s are not great for CUDA applications, 570s are significantly better at computation. mainly due to driver optimization, A Quadro would be the correct GPU to get for applications

So Nvidia posted false capability ratings?

Do you have a source for Quadro > 570 > 670?

The last 2 pages of this thread is FULL of sources

Quadro will always be top for workstation applications. Drivers are key in computation performance.
