AKG Q701 OR SENNHEISER PC360 ??

Thread Starter
Hey all

After a few weeks of research I've come to like the AKG Q701 and the Sennheiser PC360.

I want to use them for competitive gaming (FPS), casual gaming, and general use like music and stuff.

First of all, will my sound card be able to drive either pair of headphones? (Titanium X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro) It should be enough.

Which would serve me better? If the Q701 is better, is it worth the extra $45? (The PC360 is cheaper by about AU$45. I don't like wasting money, only have AU$300 for this at most)

If neither will work out, what would be a good alternative?

IMO the PC360 is a better overall choice, but I may be wrong, thats why I am here smile.gif

I think thats about it
Thanks

The Q701 far exceeds the PC360 in performance, however, you will want a dedicated headphone amp for it.

Damn.. I wouldn't be able to afford another $100+ for a new amp for quite awhile..

I'm currently running my old pair of Maxells on an M-Audio Fast Track USB. It has a headphone output impedance of 32 - 600 ohms.. Would it drive the Q701 adequately? The Q701 has an impedance of 62 ohms.. By my logic it should work.. But I'm fairly new in this area..

That won't be able to push those headphones to their finest performance, you'd be wasting your money. Unless you can purchase a hifi amplifier for the headphones don't get the AKG's although they are superior to the Senn's.

Well this would be my first *good* pair of stereo headphones so what ever I get will be FAR better than what I currently have and probably have ever heard anywhere else. The PC360s are now allot cheaper than the Q701s, seeing as I would need a new amp to drive them as well as buying a separate mic. I don't think I could be disappointed with the PC360s as I would personally have no idea how much the better the Q701s are over them. The PC360s are still far more superior to anything any of my mates have anyway so to me they should sound like the best headphones in the world.

Like I said, first hifi headphones, can't be disappointed right? It seems like I should just go for the PC360s, looks like the better option in my case.

Although I don't have the Fast-Track, it seems that there is a headphone amp built into it. With the AKG, its the sensitivity of the headphone that makes it hard to drive, not the impedance. That said, the Q701 is a bit easier to drive than the k701 so you may have good results (I sometimes drive mine with an e11 just fine).

Well I've been thinking about this for over an hour now and have decided to just get the PC360s. I would LOVE to have those AKGs but seeing my existing gear probably won't run them as good as they could be, I'd be wasting my money. If I bought the AKGs and nothing I have was enough to drive it, i would need to buy an amp for them, making the cost at least about $150 out of budget. The Sennheisers fulfill my needs without having to spend any extra on an amp and a mic, I guess thats good enough for me. Probably best not to be spending all of my saved PC funds anyways.

So yeah in the end I guess I'll be getting the Sennheisers. A bit disappointed with the idea of buying something thats not as good, but I'll get over it. I would have bought the AKGs if I didn't come here and ask about it, I had figured that they would work with what I have. So thanks for the help guys thumb.gif

Don't think of it that way at all. They're two different pieces of equipment meant for different purposes - the pc360 is far superior to many other models. Enjoy your purchase. thumb.gif

I remember reading somewhere on head-fi that the Sennheiser's that you picked are very good for gaming so while your music won't sound as good (Depending on the genre), your games will.

Also, you would regret buying the AKG's without an amp if you got them. That's what I did with a pair of Sony's that costed me almost $200 and sounded like crap because I had no amplifier.
