990FX advantages?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,
So I was wondering if buying a 990FX has any real benefit over, say a 970 Mobo? My current selection is the ASRock extrem3 990FX, but I could cut 20 euro from that price, or just get a better 970, for the same price. (by the way, I would like a board that will support Piledriver)
Any response would be great, thanks!

Edit: I would like to overclock, my RAM is 1600Mhz, and I would like a SLI ready if possible.

if you want a legit SLI config (not using a software program like hyperSLI to enable it) you need a 990x board, for 3 or 4 way SLI you need a 990fx board

990FX is enthusiast class Chipset and it supports up to 3 or 4 way crossfire/SLI. Two GPUs at 16x 16x speed. Three GPUs at 16x 8x 8x. And 4 GPUs at 8x 8x 8x 8x. This means You will get two PCIe x16 lanes (16GB/s full duplex for both GPU) to get optimum speed in dual GPU setup. And 970x can only support up to two GPUs with x16 x4 mode and single GPU at 16x mode. However in gaming, the real world perforance difference between 8x 8x and 16x 16x is only 2fps to 5fps and can only be observed with high end GPU. 990FX boards have 6 SATA ports compared to 970's 5 SATA ports. And All AMD 9xx chipset motherboards will support future Piledriver CPUs. Do not buy Asrock extreme 3 if you will ever want to overclock CPU, because extreme 3 has only 4+1 phase for CPU which is insufficient for optimum operation of 125w CPU. Buy any 8+2 phase 990FX or 970x motherboard and you will be ok.

Now, its going to be a Phenom 965 BE, but I'll upgrade to piledriver on release. I intend to get a dual SLI set up some time, and its uses are Photoshop, CAD, and gaming.

You need a 990 to get full 16x16 operation on SLI or Crossfire; a 970 can only do 16x8 at best. The 970 is best for single-GPU configurations. As others have said, you can do it on a 970 without a severe performance hit, but really, if you're going to fork over the cash for SLI in the first place, why skimp on the motherboard to save $20 or so?
