How can I make my PC less noisy with this case?

OK so I've bought a new PC, and I've upgraded it some, and the part that I've probably slacked on the most is the case, because I thought I didn't need anything cool, as I'm a performance first kinda guy, but that actually means that I have a case with no case fans and possibly pretty lame air flow.

I'm not the sickest OC'er or gamer in general, so I don't generate gratuitous amounts of heat, but I will get some, and I hear some noise. Now I should say that the Energon 550W is going to be replaced by a VX550 Corsair tomorrow, so that should probably help, but other than that I'd like to hear what I can do to keep noise at a minimum with this case (pics uploaded)

Basically there's a hole for the PSU and then one dotted grid where the rest of the case air can flow out through. Am I better off just taking the side of the case off?

I am very receptible to the "get a new case" argument, but I'd also like to hear, just for the concept of things, what can be done, so I can learn something and increase my understanding of this area, as it is a bit underprivileged in my computer-engineering knowledge.

The rest of the rig is most importantly: AMD FX 8120 CPU (with stock fan) and a HD 5670 also stock fan.

thank you

Cut the perforations out of the back fan port and put a fan in there. Looks like you might be able to put in a 120mm Fan. You could also take out the 2x 5.25" drive bay covers and get yourself some and make your own bay covers. Or you could purchase some bay covers like the Lian Li ones HERE and mod them to fit into your case.

I guess I should ask you a few questions if you decide that you want a new case.

1. What kind of features are you looking for in a new case?
2. Whats your budget?
3. Any future cooling changes? Will you be ventually going to a custom water cooling setup in the near future.
4. What are the space limitations for your case? (How much space do you have to work with in Height x Width x Depth?)

I would personally purchase a whole new case. I think a HAF 912 would be enough for you at this point. Or even a NZXT Phantom 410 or NZXT M59. If you are on a very tight budget i would go with the M59. If you want a little more style go with the Phantom. If you want something Bulky looking and "military looking" go with the HAF.

I should add one more case iff you are looking at replacement. The HAF XM. The HAF X is one of the most popular Cooler Master Cases. Its a Full Tower case. What Cooler Master has done is taken a lot of the features that people liked in the Full Tower X and put them into the XM. Its a great case and should serve you well for a long time.

Thank you for your reply.
1. I'm looking for a quiet case, so the main focus will be on noise, since I don't OC I don't expect my system to get particularly hot.
2. Minimum, since I already have a working system, it's more of a want than need basis. I'm looking to buy a used quiet case, dents and that don't bother me, it's not the cosmetics, it's just the noise.
3. None that would require me investing in something more large scale like watercooling, since I don't really OC that much - the AMD FX 8120 has a turbo boost of 4 GhZ, but it's deisgned to take that load, so it may get hot at times, but never really too hot.

What do you think about a Cooler Master Elite 310 with a 120mm fan in the case, I can get that for a fairly cheap price. Would that bring the noiselevel of my system down?

The first thing you need to do is find out exactly what part of the system is responsible for the noise that is bothering you, Is it a case fan, processor fan, video card fan , dvd drive, or hard drive access that is the culprit?
Once you have pinpointed that, you eliminate, upgrade or modify to make things quieter. Also, it may be as simple as changing some settings in bios such as smart fan settings or minimum fan speed settings. Check what those are, they should be under "pc health" or similar heading in bios.
It would be helpful if you would fill in your systems specifications , people with similar equipment can be a great resource in these forums.
Good luck smile.gif

After looking at your pictures I suspect that one of the culprits of the noise is your CPU cooler. I'll bet that when you really get that rig working that little fan kicks up and its an unholy racket. You could replace it with a new cooler. a Hyper 212+ should fit into your case. Do some measurements on the amount of space you have between the motherboard and the inside of the side panel. This will give you an idea of how much space you have for a cooler. It looks like the cooler you have on there right now has a 80mm fan on it. the Hyper 212+ will have a 120mm fan and a much larger cooling area and will offer better performance. Newegg has them for about $29.99. Also you may want to look into doing a little cable management. That will help as well.

Really needs a good exhaust fan on the back of the case too. The hot air is probably pooling in the top of the case. I would think an 8120 would be darn hot in that case, and like you said... the cpu fan will buzz like a hornest nest when at full rpm.

You're right! My cpu fan is spinning like crazy all the time, even at 40C it's at 3000RPM - is that even right? I created another thread to adress this, before I saw your post. You have a really sharp eye. So now I'm wondering whether the case is to blame, or something else can be changed to make the CPU fan less noisy.

Replacing the CPU heatsink with an aftermarket quieter heatsink will reduce the noise, as will turning on all of the various power-saving features in the BIOS. Running two fans for decent enough air flow, one intake and one exhaust, even at 1200 or less RPM will be virtually silent.

A CM Centurion would be a decent fit but the front intake would be an 80mm fan instead of 120. The smaller the fan, the potential for higher noise in many cases unless regulated by power-saving features.

The biggest noise maker in your case is that CPU fan. Replace it and you're already a lot quieter. thumb.gif

If I had to prioritize what would be better? Getting a new case ( Cooler Master Elite 310 with a 120mm fan), or getting a new cpu heatsink (Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo or Cooler master 212 PLUS)
