12GB of RAM ona Z68?

Thread Starter
I have 8gb (2 x 4GB dimms) and found an 4GB kit ( 2 x 2GB) lying around my house ( exact same model except the 4GB kit is clocked for 1600mhz not 1333). Can I use this in my system with out hiccups or BSODs?

With the right settings/timings this should work without issue. You'll likely want to manually configure everything before adding the new memory.

Since your current 2x4GiB setup is rated for lower speeds, I'd recommend just inserting the manual timings for that stuff, increasing tRFC a bit, and making sure you are running command rate of 2T.

Timings are also known as CAS latencies. I'm not sure what the other stuff is...

By default all 4 DIMMs will probably run at 1333 MHz, but like blameless said you can configure all of that stuff, and you might be able to OC the 8 GB kit up to 1600 MHz to match with the default for the 4 GB kit.

Edit: You need to make sure the two kits are matched up in the motherboard. With dual channel, you'll have 4 slots and 2 channels. So the 2 4 GB sticks need to go in one matched channel and the 2 2 GB sticks in the other. Usually it's color coded, if not it might be marked on the board. Either way if your current ram is configured right you should just add to the empty slots. If you do that, you won't have any issues.

9-9-9-24 would be CAS-tRCD-tRP-tRAS, which are all probably fine at their defaults.

tRFC is a subtiming that often needs to be loosened significantly to handle higher memory densities.

Command rate is another subtiming; in many cases using two DIMMs per channel demands a 2 cycle command rate (vs 1) for full stability.

Your board allows for adjustment of these. Look in the manual, or just poke around the BIOS.

Yes, and yes.

Manually setting the memory ratio to 1333 will force all of your memory to run at that speed.

HCI Memtest for Windows (one instance per logical core, four it your case) and Prime95 Blend (custom memory size) are good memory testers. However, it's still a good idea to use a bootable memory test first. They are less stressful, in general, but will test more memory and can find issues with very flaky setups before you boot to your OS and risk data corruption.
