Yeahhh...
...
... So how do I go about doing this? biggrin.gif

Here are my specs:

Intel i7 3770k
Gigabyte 2GB GTX 670
Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H
Corsair 8GB (2x4) 1600MHz LP
Noctua NH-D14 Double Air Fan
Lexa S Case
Corsair 650W TX2 PSU

Also, would anyone be willing to help me over Skype? Because I literally have no idea, I've read some guides they're all different and half of them don't make sense to me biggrin.gif

First of all, Welcome to OCN!!!!

1.) Read the sticked threads. They have VERY detailed step by step instructions. --> http://www.overclock.net/t/225371/intel-cpu-essentials-collected-guides/0_50

Here would be a good place to start, it's very basic and applied to all Intel processors --> http://www.overclock.net/t/1567/intel-overclocking-guide/0_50

Once you get the hang of what's going on and get your head around the basics, we can get into more technical detail. Read this which is filled with specific overclock formation to your processor --> http://www.overclock.net/t/910467/the-ultimate-sandy-bridge-oc-guide-p67a-ud7-performance-review/0_50

2.) Come back with specific questions, and your get specific answers. What doesn't make sense to you?

Here it gives me recommended ranges for voltages using an air cooler.

There are so many voltages, do I have to change them to the recommended for all of them? Also, how do I know which value in the range is the best, say I edit it to a slightly higher voltage, how do I know that it's better/worse than the previous one? Is it just determined by temperature? What could a raise in voltage with the same frequency give to a processor?

Also I have EasyTune 6 with my Gigabyte motherboard - would it be better to use the software, or use the BIOS for Overclocking?

Windows utilities can help you get some starting numbers; the end game requires manual bios settings unless you don't care much.

These voltages are "max" voltages, assuming temperature is safe. Temperatures will usually hold you back long before voltage becomes a problem. Around 1.40+ V, temperatures will become hard to maintain.

If your new to overclocking, I would start by only messing with VCC\Vcore and clock multiplier, and leave the other voltages/settings alone. Once get comfortable and can't go any higher, start adding in more variables and changing the other settings. If you change too many things at once it gets confusing. Take your time.

You know it's better/worst by testing speed AND stability. Benchmarks are used to test speed. Stability tests are used to test stability. The "Downloads" section on OCN has links to tons of benchmarks and stability testing software. Prime95 is considered a good stability test, and 3D Mark Benchmarks are considered a good benchmark tests. (but there is loads of other good software out there).

It is generally a "good practice" to overclock in the BIOS because you have more settings, more accurate information, and can achieve higher overclocks. There is nothing wrong with overclocking using your motherboard software in Windows. In fact, it's easier if your new to overclocking. Just PLEASE do not adjust some settings in Windows AND other settings in the BIOS at the same time. Do all your overclocking in one or the other. I have personally had some bad things happen while trying to do both.

What would happen if I didn't edit settings in the BIOS at the end?

Hmmm, I'm struggling to decide what numbers for where on the BIOS, if I wanted to OC the frequency to 4.5GHz

Look at my specs biggrin.gif I think my fan can handle it, but Idk what voltage value to put in what section lol
post #10 of 10
The BIOS will as you to exit, or save settings and exit.

If you didn't change anything than saving and exiting won't do anything. If you want a frequency of 4.5 GHz, your need you multiplier to be 45 and a voltage between 1.2 V and 1.45 V.

Your motherboard should have a manual that will explain each setting in the BIOS. Here is your manual --> http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4140#manual

I typically don't bother to go into this much detail, but i'll be nice......

In your manual in section 2-3, it describes the "M.I.T." \ "Advanced Frequency Settings" \ "Advanced CPU Core Features" section of your BIOS. Your "CPU Clock Ratio" is what you want to change. A ratio of 33 is 3.3GHz. So, for 4.5 GHz you need a ratio of 45.

Don't just jump straight from stock to 45. A good plan is to jump to 4.0 GHz, then run a test like Prime 95 and make sure you temperatures are still safe. Then jump it up to like 4.2 GHz, run Prime 95 and make sure your temperatures are still safe. ect....repeat. If you computer starts crashing, don't panic just add more voltage to the processor. A TINY bit of voltage goes a long way.

For voltage setting go to "M.I.T." \ "Advanced Voltage Settings" then i think "CPU Voltage control".
