The Trash bin does work but it's set for an x number of days. Except for the most recent ones. This is to prevent the any accidental loss of important PMs

The official word is that messages put in the trash are purged nightly. The 20 most-recently deleted messages are not purged, as people often accidentally delete messages and want them back. If there are ever more more than 20 messages in your trash, the 21st oldest and all older won't make it to the next day.
