Combining Corsair Vengeance modules?

Thread Starter
I currently have an Asus P6T SE motherboard for (slot 1366 cpu's), which has 6 RAM slots. I'm thinking about upgrading to a slot 2011 mb (Asus ASUS RAMPAGE IV EXTREME X79 S-2011 EATX), which has 8 RAM slots.
My 6 RAM slots are currently populated with 24 gigs, consisting of 2 packs of these babies:

CORSAIR 12GB DDR3 VENGEANCE PC3-16000 2000MHZ CL10 (3X4GB) (CMZ12GX3M3A2000C10)

Is it possible to keep those on the new motherboard, and add another 2 sticks of RAM to fill out the slots, with say:

CORSAIR 8GB DDR3 VENGEANCE PC3-17066 2133MHZ CL11 (2X4GB) RED (CMZ8GX3M2A2133C11R)

Of course, visuallty it would stand out, with 6 grey ones and 2 red ones smile.gif
I'm asking since my current dimms only seem to be sold in 3-packs.
Or, could I just put my 6 sticks in, and leave 2 slots empty?

You can't miss match the ram , if they are the same speed voltage and timings it is likely it will work to ad more, I am not sure about being able to use 6 sticks, but you could use 4 of the 6 you have now

CMT6GX3M3A2000C8(XMP) is listed as 6-slot-capable on this board, maybe it also applies to my CMZ12GX3M3A2000C10

It's astounding how they have a large compatibility list of dimms, different manufacturers and different models - is it really that hard, or are there rules-of-thumb?

I can't go down to 4 sticks ( = 16Gb) from the 24Gb I have now, that's pointless. As it looks now, I'll have to buy new RAM altogether. Sucks to have to buy new RAM everytime I switch MB - I have 6 x 2Gb sticks of DDR3 lying around from my previous configuration, +the 24 gigs in my current one, and now I'm looking to get another set of sticks to have no less than 24 Gb with the new motherboard...

Well, I work as a consultant in system development. When working, I have an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) running, and one or more virtual machines running application servers. On top of that, its nice to have temp directories mapped to RAM, such as /tmp, browser cache, etc. I've found that getting 24 gigs of RAM eliminated any kind of memory related issues I had. Plenty of room for disk cache, my virtual machines, IDE, etc.

As I spend most of my time in front of the computer, I often have lots of applications open. And, as such, it pays off in the long run to get the good stuff. So, I've gotten myself a nice mechanical keyboard, a great high-performance 27" high-resolution monitor, a great mouse, SSD disks, and lots of RAM.

Its just pretty darn good to have lots of RAM smile.gif

I bet it will. For me, 8 gigs vanish in a flash. With the IDE running (2-ish gigs), a couple of virtual machines (1-2 gigs each), 20 tabs in Chrome, 10 in Firefox, Gimp, a number of file-browsers, 10 or so command prompts - and suddenly I want to play a game, and don't want to close everything smile.gif

I think you're good, until you feel that you need more. I spend most of my time at my computer, so I try to get the most out of it. I even watch TV on it - got a TV card installed smile.gif
