Good RAM for overclocking on ASUS P6X58D (socket LGA1366)

I seem to be getting some problems with my 6GB kit of Corsair XMS3 RAM. So the question is simply what to replace it with. I'd like a 12GB kit, since I'm upgrading anyway. I guess 3 4GB-DIMMs is better than 6 2GB-DIMMs? I can't fit 6 DIMMS with tall heatsinks (massive CPU cooler), but I might be able to fit 6 with small ones, like the XMS3.

The question is really what will work with my motherboard (ASUS P6X58D-Premium) and overclock (i7 920 @ 21x191 = 4011MHz). The QVL for my motherboard (download here) lists one 12GB kit:
KINGSTON KHX1600C9D3K3/12GX(XMP) DDR3 1600 12GB(3 x 4GB).

I'm not sure about the overclockability of the HyperX series, though? Should I go for this?

I have also been looking at the following (that are not on the QVL):
Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 2000MHz 12GB
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 2000MHz 12GB CL10
Corsair XMS3 DDR3 2000MHz 12GB CL9
Corsair Dominator DHX DDR3 1600MHz 12GB

Been looking at those mostly because I can get them easily and quickly from my favorite webshop here in Norway at a reasonable price. They also have the Kingston HyperX in the QVL, by the way.

I have the P6X58D-E and also just upgraded from 6GB of Corsair to 12GB (3 x 4) of Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer

Worked with XMP first try. Also love the blue "running lights" but the "active" lights I leave off.

Looks nice, but I can't seem to find them over here. I could import them, of course.
Whatever brand, get three sticks not six. These boards have problems when you load up all the slots and the XMP profile will no longer work.

I have a 12GB Corsair Dominator 1600mhz set... granted this RAM is very nice but the X58 boards have major issues with CPU and RAM overclock combination. I wouldn't overclock them, just get a set and leave them stock till you build another build. (I have the same board, i tried so many combinations and workarounds. Its frustrated me so much, I just gave up on it.)

I don't really need to overclock the RAM, I just need it to work redface.gif My current set (or at least one of the sticks) seems to be failing on 1531MHz (1600MHz rated). Although I discovered that I had an old motherboard BIOS, so after I now installed the newest one that might have solved the problems. Time will show.

I'm seriously considering getting the Dominator GT or Vengeance kit, though. Which one would best to go for? The Dominator GT has tighter timings and runs at 1.65V while the Vengeance runs at 1.5V. And the Dominator GT comes with a useless fan... rolleyes.gif

Dominator GT hands down. If you go with either choice you wont have problems like your XMS3 set.

DDR3-2000 is likely not going to run at full speed on most Bloomfields.

I'd be looking at inexpensive DDR3-1600. It's not going to hold you back, and stuff like Samsung MV-3V4G3 really cannot be matched for the price.

Well, I can always adjust the divider to take advantage of the extra speed. I agree that 1600MHz would be enough, though, but most quality 12GB kits for sale here at the moment are 2000MHz.

You need to run your uncore clock at double the DDR speed of the memory. Very few Bloomfields can maintain a 4GHz uncore clock without a lot of QPI/VTT voltage and high-end cooling.

Does it need to be a kit?
