Hello, it is summer time and I am trying to do some gaming on my laptop; it isn't going so well. I have a G51JX:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220700
It has a Core i7 720qm and GTS 360m 1gb. The processor is still nice but the graphics seem to struggle in games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2, GTA IV and Fable 3. I am wadering if anyone has some insight on any software tweaks I can perform on the 360m or something to improve cooling such as applying new thermal paste or taking a piece of the bottom off and then overclocking. Any insight would be great, thanks!

OP, I actually wanted to reply sooner, but the weekend got in the way, BF3/D3 and stuff. LOL

To start, I would use something like evga Precision or MSI Afterburner to Overclock your GPU. Just take it slow testing in between small bumps to see if it will increase it at all.

On my G60VX which had a core 2 duo generation processor, the laptop had a built in asus turbo utility which would OC the CPU 10-15%. I upgrade the CPU in mine as well, and the overclock would push it to around 3.1ghz.

Other than that, maybe a re-install of windows will help you to speed things back up. As for temperatures. I would recommend that you re-paste the CPU/GPU with better stuff to help cool it further. Definitely do some research on mods for your model laptop to give you some ideas.

overclocking your GPU will slightly increase temperatures, so I did a cooling mod to help keep the laptop cool and prevent any throttling

Where the silver ring was in this picture used to be a solid piece of plastic:

What I did was pop the ring out, cut the plastic out, and replace it with mesh from a pencil holder I bought at a dollar store. Looking at your newegg link though, it seems as though they didn't use that bottom cover. The good news is, I am sure you could find a G60 bottom cover and it would be directly compatible. In addition to the cooling mod, I also pulled the blue wire from the fan control harness and taped it off. This made the fan spin at 100%, which was loud, but helped cool the OCed CPU and GPU. a Cooling stand also helps keep things cool when you're overclocking

Unfortunately, that laptop is aging pretty considerable. You could look into a GPU upgrade (maybe to a 460m) but I don't know if it is possible. After the mods I made and overclocking my GTX 260m in my asus, I was able to make BC2 run at playable frame rates.

Hope this helps in some way. Some of it was extreme, but they are some options!

Hey man, thanks for the in-depth reply. I will go ahead and put some Arctic Silver 5 that I have on there and overclock it a bit. Unfortunately I do not have that speaker on the bottom so I can't do much there. I was really wishing I could just upgrade the gpu to something like the 480m or just anything better because I really like the laptop and the cpu. I tried to research this and found old posts on various sites saying that the gpu interface is MXM 2.1 reversed. A few posts said a gtx 285 would work but didn't think it would fit, I guess I need to do some more research on that. The only other thing that is going through my mind is maybe getting new/custom higher performance cooling that will still fit then overclocking the crap out of it lol. The gtx 260m is just about exactly my gpu so you know how disappointingly certain games like BFBC:2 can run. Thanks for the info on the blue wire too; I will use that as a last resort with overclocking. Any other thoughts you or anyone has is always appreciated and thanks again

Once I overclocked my GPU, it improved performance enough that BC2 was playable online at medium/low settings with framerates in the mid 40's. I would look into getting the replacement cover and doing the mod. It allows a crazy amount of cool air into the laptop. I'm sure a replacement cover can be had. and as for the blue wire, I would use a tiny screw driver and carefully pry it out of the pin header, that way it can be reinserted and still work if you want to quiet the notebook down.

Good luck!

Well I applied the Arctic Silver and left the bottom cover off. Used the nVidia control panel to take the core from 550mhz to 625mhz. Temps aren't great but not much worse. Haven't had time to really test it out or get more speed but i'm a bit more happy now.

Well with a reapply and no bottom cover, the temps should have gone down slightly, although AS5 has a curing time.

Did you remove the blue wire from the pin header for the GPU fan?
