It was not called "Senior Moderator" back then but is now the equivalent.
Short history lesson for you:
1 - Forum Moderator > Forum Director > Community Director > Management
Then it went on to look like this:
2 - Forum Moderator > Forum Director > Management
Now it looks like this:
3 - Forum Moderator > Senior Moderator > Management
Back in 2008 (probably around the time you joined the site) the structure looked like (1), after a huge overhaul of the Staff, it was deemed that the Community Director role was no longer necessary and would integrate itself with the Forum Director duties. The structure than changed to (2). Around when this happened I held the position of Forum Director (which would be present day Senior Moderator as per (3)). I took on the position of Managing Editor afterwards and then as you mentioned retired and came back with a less involved role within the staff.
