iP965 or 975x?

Thread Starter
im thinking about getting a new motherboard to go with a 6400 c2d (maybe 6600 dependign on moneys).

tomshardware have made me re-think my options, i was thinking abuot the AW9D max but after this article http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/10/10/cheap_thrills_uk/ that shows an ABIT AB9 pro providing an awesome overclock to a 6400, my decision is swaying.

as far as i can tell, the iP965 chipset is arguably better at this moment in time for overclocking (higher FSB's seem to be possible) but the 975x chipset will be a better investment as its newer and supports more features.

money is an issue but if it comes down to 30quid either way and one is considerably better i will obnviously go for it.

i may be completely wrong but i would appreciate any advise that can be offered.

p.s i am a kean overclocker and the potential speeds are what really matters to me, a 56% overclock strong appeals to me

I have heard much better things about the 965 than the 975 from many trusted sites including toms hardware. I would go for that if I were you.

975X ftw, it has better pcie-bandwith and options, and the 965 has a northbridge clock strap when over 400mhz

arg, and there i thought this was going to a be straight foward answer...
what do you mean by a "northbridge clock strap"? because i keep hearing that 975x chipsets keep getting stuck at around 350FSB whereas ive seen lots of overclocks on the 965 that go well above 400FSB

FYI, the 975 is OLDER than the 965. The 965 was designed specifically to run the Core 2 Duo chips.

It greatly depends on what you feel is most important and what you want. The 975 runs dual video cards faster, the 965 seem to hit higher FSB....some have found a strap at around 400FSB IIRC, but that is still higher than most seem to get on the 975......the 965 is supposed to have a better, faster memory controller.....it doesn't appear to be fully realized yet, but likely a BIOS update in the future will let it loose.

Truthfully, going with one of the high end boards from ASUS, ABIT, or Gigabyte for either chipset, you really can;t go that wrong...the differences between most of them is fairly minor.....I would go with the 965 simply because it is newer and has already lept forward with BIOS updates since it's release, at least on the ASUS side....and full speed dual video cards really isn't that important to me, so far my single X1900XTX at stock speeds is handling even my huge screen very well although I haven't fully stressed it yet.

For a E6400 and down the 965P will be the better chipset (and it is newer then the 975) for an E6600 and up the 975x is good. But the 965p has higher FSB capabilities.

thanks guys youve really cleared that up, i assumed the 975 wsa newer purely because it seems to have a higher price tag, what asus motherboard would you recomend? so far ive only really been looking at the abit ab9 pro purely because its the only 965 ive heard much about. the prices seem to go up a little for the asus but i think its worth it.
