Hi all,

I have been looking at getting an SSD for sometime now but I am getting lost with all the different types of memory and controllers and the pro's and con's of each.

So which of the following SSD's would you guys reccomend?

Crucial M4 - £83
Samsung 830 - £90
SandDisk Extreme - £80
Corsair Force GT - £94
Plextor M3 - £120 (Would prefer not to spend that much though)

They are all the 120/128gb varients of the drives, please say if you think there is a better SSD that I have missed off the list.

Thanks in advance

at those prices...def. Samsung 830.

btw...Samsung 830 > M4. There are a lot of M4 fanbois on these forums.

Actually, Plextor M3 is best ssd of the ones you listed...but the Samsung 830 is the best bang for buck from the prices you stated.

Ranks

Plxtor M3 Pro > Corsair Performance Pro > Plextor M3 > Samsung 830 > Crucial M4

Thanks for the quick replies guys

+Rep to all

Looks like it's between the m4 and the 830 so far...

@YamiNoZero - The Vertex 4 is £105 here, do you think it is worth the extra cost? The reason I didn't add the Vertex 3 or Agility 3 is because I had heard they had reliability issues? (Could be wrong though)

EDIT: Does anyone know where the Force GT's stand (overall) compared to the 830's and M4's?

Thanks again everyone

Does anyone think this makes it a better option or should I still stick with the M4 or 830?
Yup!!! Plextor M3 is VERRRYYY GOOD!!! GET ITTT!!!!! it's better than M4 and Samsung.

If you lived in US you could get the Plextor M3 for $99 from newegg.

Now I just need to convince myself to spend £106... xP I try to set myself a budget but always end up going over... My wallet hates me.

Think of it in this way:
It's the biggest and best upgrade you can do with your machine right now - which is another reason why you shouldn't "cheap it out" (aka buy the M3

Definitely go with the 830 or the M3.

Both are great drives that have Toggle NAND which means that you will get lower access times when opening your files but more importantly, your programs.

The M4 is a good drive, but it only costs 7 Euros to upgrade to the 830, I would never let that offer go.

The Sandisk is also blazing fast, but no one really knows how reliable it will be in the long-term.

I can confirm this. After a few hours of using my agility 3 it bricked and I get to begin the fun RMA process. I plan on getting a samsung 830 drive once this all gets sorted out.

Tuff decision b/w the M3 and 830. I would cheap out personally and get a 830...and I have a M3. lol

The m4 is a great SSD and happens to use synchronous NAND. On paper it may not be as fast as some of the others, but it has a proven track record.

The Samsung 830 is also excellent. It uses Samsung's own ARM-based controller and Samsung's own toggle-class NAND. Speed and reliability are both excellent, and it is faster but more expensive than the Crucial m4.

The SanDisk Extreme and Corsair Force GT are very similar. They both use SandForce SF-2281 controllers. The Extreme uses SanDisk's own 24nm toggle NAND, while the Force GT uses synchronous 25nm IMFT NAND. The Extreme is theoretically a hair faster.

The Plextor M3 uses the same Marvell 88SS9174-BLD2 controller as the Crucial m4. However, it uses 24nm Toshiba toggle NAND instead of the 25nm sync NAND found on the m4, so it is slightly faster.

The verdict? You'd be hard pressed to notice a difference among all of these. I have an m4 and Samsung 830, and will soon be putting a Plextor M3 in my laptop.

@Reista - I don't know anyone in the US, only in Canada and the prices there aren't very good, looks like I'm buying in England

I do envy your electrical component prices...

I think I will probably end up getting the Samsung, it's cheaper (more like what I wanted to spend) and most people that have posted seem to think it has similar performance to the M3.

Does anyone know about reliability of the SanDisk Ultra Series? I am also looking for a drive for my laptop (Old IBM T60) and figured £65 for the 120gb version seemed pretty decent seeing as I can't use all the performance of the more expensive drives as my laptop is only SATA1, what do you think?

Thankyou yet again everyone, +Rep

I'm not really sure about what you mean with "reliability", care to elaborate?
I have read a few reviews on the Ultra and it seems a decent enough drive, by reliablilty I meant has anyone heard of problems with the drive like with the old Sandforce based OCZ drives?
