A sad sad day at the elemein household... Need fast help please.

The ol' dv6 is dead.

My laptop was a HP Pavilion dv6-3040ca. It was snappy, responsive, powerful, and best of all, it was mine.

It was my first laptop that I had all to myself and that I put my own money into. Though the past few months, it's had a broken hinge support. It has been slowly getting worse and worse, so today I unscrewed the support and the underbody enclosure and opened the laptop a then it happened. The support physically hit the motherboard. Hard. I was surprised it didnt crack. I closed it in my panic becuase I didnt wanna do anymore damage, and it hit it again. Again, I'm surprised it didnt crack, but the damage was done. I tried pressing the power button, and even with a fully charged battery and good AC adapter, it would not turn on. It was recieving power, the only one remaining alive light told me so, but otherwise, it was dead.

I just came back from Best Buy. Got a diagnostic; it was indeed the motherboard. They said it may cost a simple 20$-500$ repair depending on the severity of the damage. They didnt know the severity. I did. I knew it also had a cracked part of the motherboard in the section where the audio unit is housed. And the hinge support mustve done a number.

The dv6. Was dead.

I can not afford 500$ to replace just the motherboard for the hinge support to hurt it again.

I can only buy a new one.

I am a student, so my budget is not very big, keep in mind. I am looking for something that is more powerful than the dv6, so I need suggestions; but I have three main questions.

1. What can I salvage off the laptop and sell to eliviate the costs and perhaps even feel good that parts of my laptop live on?
2. How can I salvage the data off my hard drive? I am 90% sure the hard drive is alive, and I know it's physically A-OK, so how can I extract my data from it?

And the last, and biggest question of all: 3. I have a few hours before stores close. I need a new laptop today or I need to go two weeks without a laptop. I need a laptop during study-for-exam week. So I need a new laptop today. I need a laptop that is:

~14"-15.6" in screen size.
Built in webcam and microphone.
Better processor than Triple Core AMD Phenom II N830 chipset.
Better video card than ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics with 128 MB of VRAM.
Better than 4GB DDR3 RAM. Or equivalent.
Needs atleast 320 GB of HDD space.
Need b/g/n Wi-Connectivity.
Atleast 3 USB ports, atleast 2.0 in version.
Would prefer a 101-key keyboard. I dont need a numpad, but the more standard keys, the better.
Needs Windows 7.

And overall, a good laptop. Can you help me please? I'm desperate for help!

Edit: By the way, the dv6 had one issue. A heating issue. It ran hot and loud often, so a laptop without that issue would be good. Also, If it comes down to HDD speed vs HDD space. I take speed. I only need 320 GB.

Get something like this to get the data off your hdd

http://www.amazon.co.uk/LogiLink-USB-2-0-SATA-Cable/dp/B001EOO660/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&qid=1338750183&sr=8-21

I used a similar one to recover data from a laptop that had been ran over. Worked perfectly.

Those would be my initial guesses for you, but if you could give a few examples of what you use this laptop for such as playing league of legends etc I could find you a cheaper laptop as the ones I just listed for you might be more than you need.

Unfortunately you won't be able to salvage much for future use. Maybe the ram, battery. But you can't buy a laptop and it not come with ram or a battery (if they even fit the new laptop).

The hard drive you can salvage though. To get the data off it just plug it into a full size computer (assuming it has the right sata connectors) and just drag and drop stuff off of it.

I personally can't suggest any specific laptops however I would recommend you have a look at lenovo.com as they seem to be some of the better ones, at least most recommended. Is what I'm going for when I get a bit of money to play with.

My budget is -700$

I mainly play some graphics intensive games, do normal school work (so microsoft office stuff), SOMETIMES edit movies. Very rarely, and dont need a lot of power for it, I do a lot of web surfing (with many tabs), and some other small stuff.

But mainly games (MW3, LoL, WoT, etc.), heavy web surfing (I use Opera browser), and school work.

By the way, IT MUST BE AVAILIBLE IN A STORE. (NO STRICTLY ONLINE PURCHASES)

I don't know if those exact models are available in store but if your old laptop could do that stuff (I've only played LoL on a laptop with similar specs to your old one) those new ones will easily do all of the above.

Here is one best buy appears to have http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+15.6%22+Pavilion+Laptop+-+6GB+Memory+-+640GB+Hard+Drive+-+Dark+Umber/4815065.p?id=1218533331581&skuId=4815065.

If I were you, I would go into a store like best buy etc (since you require in store purchases) and look for a QUAD CORE AMD APU. While Intel CPUs are faster than AMD's CPUs anything you do will never notice the difference and you will be strictly limited by graphics which is where the AMD APU will dominate Intel without it even being a fair competition.

For your reference incase you were unaware...
CPU = Central Processing Unit
GPU = Graphics Processing Unit (Video Card)
APU = Accelerated Processing Unit (CPU+GPU)

Do not confuse an APU for integrated graphics, while an APU can be considered "integrated graphics" it uses discrete level graphics parts on the CPU die and is comparable to low mid end dedicated video cards when paired with enough/fast enough memory.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions I'll try to answer them as best I can.

Thank you very much, and theres been some good news, a friend of mine rearranged something I was going to do tomorrow and I have until tomorrow to go instead, which is good.

My old laptop could do it, but when it came to the games, it ran VERY hot, and I had to do the lowest possible graphics and it was really borderline working. Probably due to the 128 MB Vram which is really quite low... Anything non-games it did just fine though. I'll take a look at what you gave me above and thanks again!

Glad to be of help... One last piece of advise though to get extra performance out of whatever system you go with in the end.... Manufacturers tend to put a ton of crap on the computer you buy from them, and while you can remove most of it, lately I've been seeing them do a lot of custom tweaking of the Windows OS itself. Simply download and install a program like ImgBurn and download a .iso of your version of windows IE Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.iso and burn the .iso onto a DVD.

Download all the drivers your computer will need onto a flash drive and then reformat the laptop with disc you just created, install all the drivers and then when you enter the windows key (off the bottom of the laptop) and go to validate it, it will tell you it couldn't do it. Select the phone registration option, it will give you a 1-800 # to call (Not an actual person but an automated system) you will read off a few sets of letters/numbers and then it will read off a set back to you and after you enter the set it provides you. Windows will now be validated, completely legal, and free of all the nasty bloatware that was slowing down your computer from reaching its true potential thumb.gif

Oh good to know! Thanks a bunch! By the way, I've been looking around at a lot of laptops and theres a few trends I've been seeing.

i3 processors and i5s, as well as Intel 3000 Graphics. Passmark Benchmark says they're all very good, but in practice, how are they actually? Do you have any info on them?

Also, some i5 computers come with integrated graphics, so I assume this would be a "APU"? How are the integrated graphics of the i5 in terms of speed and quality?

Any info on them would be good, Im now seeing that I paid ~750$ for my laptop two years ago, and today I can get a computer that's literally TWICE as good for 600 dollars. Oh technology, you move so fast.

No, the Intel 3000 graphics are integrated graphics like your laptops ATI 4250 Mobility. APUs are something only AMD has. Even hardcore fans of Intel wouldn't try to tell you that the Intel graphics are any good for basic use let alone for gaming. The HD3000 can barely play 720/1080p youtube videos without having problems and the newer HD4000 is still nothing compared to the graphics an AMD APU has. Basically the Intel graphics are okay for your grandma, but that is about as far as they go. You will want either an AMD APU, or a laptop with an actual video card in it if you can find one within your budget range. If you see an Intel Processor with an AMD or Nvidia graphics card within your 700$ budget range however that will probably be your best bet so just link the laptop so I or someone else can tell you if it is a modern system capable of modern usage. Intel makes incredible CPUs, but their graphics are to be avoided like the plague =P
