You know that they do sell black rivets right? I bought mine at Lowes. I checked online to find you a link, but I couldn't find them online. They have white and black and plain aluminum. ymmv.

Patiently awaining an update from you!

Too late now! lol I will have a look though! I went to ace since it was closer to me at the time and they only had black plastic ones...ewww.

I thank you for keep up with the build log! It means a lot! Your case is coming along great! Isn’t sleeving fun?! haha.

Anyways here is the update! Been working nonstop and today was my day off so went H.A.M on relaxation before I did some more modding.

Two days’ worth of updates incoming! biggrin.gif

So I finish painting the overspray stuff black and wow does that glossy back look amazing. Finger magnet though =/ I might have to find a different black for the decal. We will see.

450

Rivet galore!!!! That is about 100 rivets. I might as well paint them all while I am at it. They need to fully cure so I don't end up removing the paint on them when I start riveting.

450
The after picture of the rivets. Sorry for the bad picture. It is hard to get good lighting when it is raining =/ Tropical storm Debbie is going crazy over here. I have pics of that too if you want to see. Took them while I was at work on my phone. tongue.gif

450

Before the coat of black. I wish I taped the wholes better before putting the masking sheet over it. Would of prevented this step. But it looks better imo.

450
Before the coat of white thumb.gif

450
After picture. All lined up. Looks great! Just have to let them fully dry now for a day or two.

450
Overspray catcher/exhaust. God that poor filter. Got to protect the environment! thumb.gif

450
This is where everything dries after painting. Then after an overnight drying I move them to the dry/cure room upstairs where the sun and A/C helps it dry.

450
I painted my back I/O panel too. From silver to black to better match the color scheme.

450

450

450
Here is my side project of the RAT7 mouse mod im working on too! Looking good! Saving me 100 bucks instead of buying the newer version.

Anyways back to business.

450

450

So here is the test panel I did. I’m so mad at how little effort I did on this piece and it is the best painted piece out of all of them….sigh. It’s so perfect and that’s the first coat without sanding yet! Imagine what it would look like after wetsand and second coat! mad.gif

My fears did come true though. Spray clear coat on it. One coat. Let it dry for about a minute. Then a second coat. Let that sit for 5mins then one last light coat and let it sit for two hours.
Results…….

450

Dam it! I think I have to try spray one light coat and let it sit for a good hour or two and see what happens. One part of the paint didn’t even bubble! So im guessing the amount of coats all at once didn’t agree with the paint. I will scrap the paint off and try again. The clear coat makes the paint come right off which in a way is good for me! Haha less sanding! tongue.gif

Continues on next post!

I had to do some clean up of the paint. One bad part about the tape is the adhevise helps the paint create a nice “skin” layer when you remove it.

450

Had to use some blades and the Exacto knife to shave it off. Makes the paint sharper! lachen.gif Haha get it. Lol enough with the corny jokes. It does make the edges cleaner looking.

450
All clean. Have to work on it a bit more but most of it was gone.

So I bought some bondo a week ago for a secret part of the project that I couldn’t tell you till now. I have two surprises coming! I cant tell you Part of it now! DRUM ROLL PLEASE!drum.gif
Haha after the explanation.whistle.gif

450
So I had to bondo the top plastic panel. The power button, reset button, E sata(who uses that anymore!) , and last but not least the led on/off which I don’t use ever since I replaced the stock front fan. That will leave a nice clean look for the usb and headphone jacks. Nice and centered too! Why you ask? Well that is for later wink.gif lets just stay it will be replaced by some kickass buttons somewhere else.

Man the bondo stuff smells so strong and awful! Next time I am doing it outside. Even with ventilation, the smell sticks in your nose for hours. That stuff is amazing besides all the smell.

450

First coat. Just to fill in the hole. I will add more to make it flush and then sand it smooth.

Ok so the second surprise comes right meow! Yes meow!

450

Look what I got in the mail today! Finally came after being on back order for a week! Got boosted to first class for free because of it! I was going to wait to show you this till the end but I couldn’t wait! Need to spice the build log up a bit!

This is just pure sexy. This will be my new case emblem on the front. It is just amazing. Got the idea while I was driving one day and took me forever to find the right one. It is OEM genuine part too! Came with mounting hardware. I tried it on the mesh I have front the front panel. Have to mod the mesh holes to make it fit straight. It will complete the build so perfectly!

That is it for now. Tomorrow is a school day so I will try to do some work maybe before class. Bondo work I guess since it is easy. Oh and the side panels god. Just PITA! Have to scrape the primer off of the case and really sand it good. Spray it and sand it again. I need to take my time. I’m screwing myself over everytime I rush. I might have Saturday off so that will be perfect!

oh here is my poor panels =(

450

450

The primer was on too thick. I wanted to make sure I filled the holes and went over board =/ well nothing like scraping it with a blade cant fix. I did some already if you cant tell. The other parts are good except for the window panel which i didn't get a chance to do. I was done for the day.

450

I don't know if i posted this already..nope I didn't but I cut out the extra plastic on the front panel. looks better imo and more airflow.

That is it for now! Enjoy the update. Thank you for all following me! I’m having lots of fun with this mod. Even if it is taking lots of time, that is ok because it helps relax me in a way. =)

Time for bed guys I will keep you posted! Cheers!

Nice update TG! Quick question for you- was the clear coat that wrinkled the paint the same type and brand as the paint used?
Thats a sweet looking mustang emblem thumb.gif Painting is a pain, but some good results can be achieved with practice and patience.
My gut feeling is that the rivets you painted are going to get marred when you use them, wether they have full cure time or not, but for your sake, I hope I am wrong haha
+rep for an awsome update. Looks like your making some good progress even with the setbacks.

Edit: hmmm... won't let me rep you for some reason. I'll try again later cheers.gif

Yes it was the same brand and everything. I think the reason it wrinkled was because i Layed it on too much too fast instead of just one coat and waiting for the coat to really fully dry. Then sand that coat with 1500 girt, spray, dry, then buff with 3000grit and if needed add a really light final coat and buff it with compound to make it shine like the car thumb.gif. Im thinking two-three coats is good. I will do a lighter coat next time on the test piece and let it sit for a good hour or two while i work on the rest of the project. I really want to use clear coat to protect my paint. Trial and error is all.

As for the rivets i fear the same =/ lets hope not. if it does i will have to make a trip to lowes for black rivets or white if they don't have any. Orange and white is pretty sick as well. Figuring that out as i am painting =) having the white interior pieces next to the orange makes everything stand out so much more.

The setbacks are annoying yes but i have to push forward. I am glad I have multiple parts of this project to work on. That way if something is frustrating me or needs time to dry I can work on the other parts.

Oh btw congrats on the MOTM! i voted for ya biggrin.gif

Hey guys so here is the much needed update! Life is on full speed for me so I haven't done much. Just some that I can everyday. I plan to assemble the case on the 4th of July! Which is today! Its 4 in the morning. I fell asleep at my gf's house lol. Got off work at 11PM.

Anyways so I went to the post office and pickup my package! I wonder what it could be!

450

I knew what it was already =)) the next surprise I had planned and opening up another can of worms to this project. I have been focusing on this part the most as it is one of the hardest I think just because of looks and designs.

450

Yes that's right....it is a push to start button for my computer! Haha sweet right!?! I wanted something that would make my build stand out from the rest. =) I worked wonders when I tested it =) even has a led in the switch to tell me if it is on or off. Funny thing is this is made for my car =P so if all else fails me; I can move it to my car! Haha.

Anyways moving on!

So to have this push to start button on my case I didn’t want to just slap it on there and call it a day. I wanted to really stand out there and be the center piece of the top of the case. So I got the idea to have it raised up on an angle using sheet metal for crafts that ace sells thumb.gif god I love ace and just tool stores in general! haha.

I made some paper prototypes to see how I would want it and how to transition back to being raised to flat. I needed a pace for the fill port as well. Maybe some led on/off controls too but that is later down the road.

450

Looks good I think! I will use some bondo to make it appear smoother. Bondo ftw! I had another prototype laying around that I loved but forgot to take pictures of. It was more streamline and went with the flow of the top panel. Keep forgetting to take pictures. I mess up more if I worry about pictures all the time lol.

I was using a vise with a rubber mallet and some other stuff lying around to bend the metal. It was working but way to hard so I didn’t want to spend more money by going to get it fabricated so I found out harbor freight tools sells metal brakes!(huge metal bending presses) 40 bucks for 18" one. That was too much for me since I was only going to use it for a few times. After that dust would just collect on it in the garage. They did sell a smaller handheld one called a metal seamer. 6"s! Perfect!

450

450

I have been getting better at using it as I went but after a few bends and cuts to make it all fit together this is how it looks. I’m still working on getting the final shape but I think it is turning out great! Sand, paint, prime, and orange it up!

450

450

450

The push to start will be in the middle facing forwards and then I will have the fill port for the water loop in the back of that. Hard to see it until it is done. =)

I will be doing a lot in the morning. Cleaning the frame, assembling of the frame, painting the side panels, and some metal/bondo work.

I got some replacement feet for my R.A.T 7 mouse which is almost complete! Just waiting on the last two pieces to fully cure before reassembling the whole thing. I really miss that mouse. I didn't know you could miss something like that. My hands don't feel the same when I'm gaming. I suck without it! Lol.

Here is how she looks so far.

450

450

450

I live for this stuff! Taking apart electronics, seeing how they work, and then know all how to put it back together even after two weeks! Use to do it all the time when I was little. Parents gave me cool electronic toys that I would always take apart to see how to worked and then but it all back together like nothing happened. I guess that's why i love computers so much and why this is my hobby. Seeing how it all works is amazing to me!

That is it for now. More to come! Keep on checking back guys! thumb.gif I need your support!

Update coming soon! i tried updating a few days ago and the power went out right as i was about to hit post.......it was a huge update too. mad.gif

I am almost done with everything. Working on the top switch filling it in with bondo to make it look sleek and im working on creating new mesh that i got in the mail from Performance biggrin.gif The mesh that came with the case has all fancy curves and bends in it and a impression for the case badge which im trying to remove by just using my own mesh. Pics will follow to explain further.

It's looking awesome!! Can't wait to see the finished product. On a side note, how do you like the R.A.T.7? Always been curious about it myself.
