Need a good cooler

I currently have This cooler. It has served me well for almost a year now, got it free from someone never used tongue.gif. For my current processor the AMD Phenom II 960T unlocked to x6, its not really good enough for it, it worked for the AMD Phenom II 560 x2(again unlocked x4) i had.

So what do you recommend, there is the Hyper 212 Evo, but im sure there has to be better coolers out there for cheaper. On newegg the evo is $29.99 currently. I don't want to pay over $30, period.

This is the case i have, from using a ruler the hyper 212 evo would fit with about 1 or 2 mm clearance, so really nothing bigger than it, I want a 120mm cooler nothing else.

So what are my options?

Also basically my plan for my pc since i built it last year is this:

Buy what i see as the best for the price, or use something i already have then upgrade it later on.

So here i am exactly 1 year - a week from when i originally put my pc together.

Next comes the case and ram, then i will have replaced everything except the GPU
I will then build that old pc back up and sell it to my cousin (has been begging me for a while for a good pc)tongue.gif

seeing the case from micro states the total width of the case is 7.25" (185mm) wide.
you really should measure from the CPU spreader to the side panel mount and re-verify
your distance. the 212 EVO is 160mm. leaving 25mm for chip, socket, MB standoffs and
rear managment and 2 side panels. thats cutting it close. and your aonly grace is that a
member have this same case with the same setup you have to verify fitment.

buying on price is good, but also can lead to some iffy performance, unless you mean
buying perfornance with a good price in mind.

as for your cooler issue.. i'd reconsider and find a shorter performance cooler..

Looks like only the 212+ or EVO is your only option for under $30.

sell the rig to him now and start from scratch. buying parts on piecemeal only works if you have quality components to begin with. from your description, it sounds like you just bought the whole system pre-built from microcenter. and, if that's the case, then it's not really worth "upgrading" because there aren't any quality components that you can/should salvage for your next build.

to properly build a computer in piecemeal, you want to invest heavy on components that do not carry the same depreciation as the rest of the system. case, HSF, PSU, generally don't depreciate like the rest of the system so buying a quality unit will last you years (sometime a decade) of quality performance. to start off, don't spend too much $ on components with high depreciation (CPU/GPU/mobo/RAM etc...) this way you have a higher relative budget for the things that don't depreciate like a quality case.

I did not buy anything pre-built from microcenter.

I started off with this pc when i got the case, mobo, processor, and ram all other stuff came from my old pc which was 4 years old.
I slowly bought things after that, got a new gpu at the end of summer, SSD in fall. Beginning of this year i bought a new mobo, processor, and PSU.
So im good on that stuff. The oldest things i have are the ram, case, and hsf. which pretty much need

At the time i didnt see how much a good case is actually needed. I know now and the next case i get will be much better.

I will sell it to him when i get a better case.

My goal for the pc originally was to stay under 500 dollars, 600 ish after i got my ssd.

I would say this is more of a gradual rebuild, with the original pc being able to be rebuilt in the end.

spent like 40 bucks on case 100 on cpu and mobo 50 on ram 260 on gpu 50 dollars on other random stuff for it not exact but it was around there another.

if your goal is to eventually end up with a beast of a machine. do what i've suggested and spend heavily on a good cooler, case, and powersupply. those 3 things almost never change. a good case will last you till the end of the ATX specification which doesn't look like it's going to happen within the next 10 years or more. a high quality powersupply will last at least 5 years (up to 10 years if you protect it with a UPS) a quality CPU cooler will last as long as the socket is of the right size or if the manufacture put out an adapter kit for newer sockets. (noctua offers free socket adapter for future sockets if you show proof of purchase)

other commodities such as DVD player / HDD have varying lifespan and useful lifetime so those are harder to pin down. in general, i keep an external dvd player for software installation purposes and that last a LONG time or till software becomes too large for what they can fit on a dvd disk. CPU and GPU have an expected useful lifetime of around 4 years or less depending on how demanding the games you play.

use these general guidelines to figure out what percentage of your computing $ should be focused on

Zalman CNPS10X Optima = very good
Xigmatek Gaia SD1283 = very good
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 = very good

They all cool within 3-5c of best on market.
