This 345W measurement is off my 4th gpu. Here's what I was benching. Bah, futuremark really blew the quad tahiti scaling, but trifire is working good.

I do the same thing but my seperate PSU's are incorporated into the build. Two of the 7970's each have thier own dedicated FSP group 500w PSU, and the other two draw from the main 1200w AX1200

GEEZ! That's freaking nuts!

Hey Guys,

I am quite new to this site and thread, but I was hoping if someone could help me in my dilemma. Not till recently, I had just purchased my Sapphire HD 7970 OC Edition with Boost, specifically this one, http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1157&pid=1481&psn=&lid=1&leg=0 . Now I have already OC'd it to 1100mhz @ 1138mV on the core and 1600mhz @ 1525mV for memory. I have been able to prove the OC stable with various benchmarks, and gaming sessions, even prolonged hours on MOHW Custmize Soldier screen where GPU Usage was at maximum and memory was more than 2000mb as said by MSI Afterburner.

My dilemma is that this OC seems to not be sticking out on games that does not require a high GPU Usage. To elaborate more on it, Whenever GPU Usage is not constant (fluctuating), games such as, CS GO, GTA 4 with mods and ENB, L.A. Noire, the Core clock and Memory Clock also fluctuate. The fluctuation may change from 1100mhz-925mhz (stock clock)- 501mhz and even 300mhz. Memory was just jumping from 1600-1425(stock clock)-150mhz. Even when I run multiple OC setups or bone stock it still does this at these specific games. I think it'd continue to do so too for games that have fluctuating GPU Usage, however when GPU usage is constant there seems to be no problem, regardless if it's 99% GPU Usage or 75% or so GPU Usage. Temps seem to be fine, since in those games they barely even passed 60 degrees C.

I believe that someone told me to check this site to look for a way to disable powerplay but still maintain 2D clocks to have a low idle temp.(?)
I hope some of you guys here can help me out on my dilemma, any help would be much appreciated.

BTW I have tried to disable powerplay via MSI AB 3.0 Beta 9, it gave me constant 3D clocks no matter what I did, which was good in terms of gaming, bad in terms of browsing the web or just doing 2D things.

I am hoping for something that would make 2D clocks available when not doing anything Graphic Intensive, but would automatically go to 3D clocks when a game is started or GPU Usage is more than, let's say, 20%.

Thank You for your help and time in advance.

EDIT: If it'd help my ASIC grade is 76.3%, rest of system specs are in the sig. Thanks

Can you post a pic of your AB settings showing what boxes you've checked for powerplay bypass?

Hello, Thank you for your quick reply. I really hope you could help me here.

That's the settings I used. Although, currently, I have powerplay enabled. I only got powerplay back after completely uninstalling both AMD CCC (incl. deleting REGEDIT files) and MSI AB. I clicked Disable ULPS, and the unofficial overclocking mode to "without Powerplay support". MSI AB would then restart, and upon opening it, a prompt of the EULA would come, it is saying the thing you type in the .CFG file "that you are consenting to the unofficial overclock method without the support of MSI AB and AMD blah blah blah". That then gave me 3D clocks full time, even when just viewing the desktop, therefore resulting in to more higher temps and more power draw. The downside of it was, if you click reset while doing these things, the screen would hang and AMD Display Driver would keep crashing and making you have to do a hard reboot. Then, only then, would the clocks be reset. However, just by changing the profiles, transition seems ok, the screen would just go black for a split second and then go back. MSI AB 3.0.0 Beta 9 has some settings about that too.

My problem is that, I really want to make my GPU run at 3D clocks when I am playing games, it seems to be throttling at times. This was said in my previous post. However, having a GPU usage of 99% would not make it throttle. It also did not seem to be a temp issue or a PSU issue (since I was able to run it w/o powerplay support at all times running in 3D clocks).

I was just asking on How to make sure the GPU would run (at all times) during gaming at 3D clocks without possibility of downclocking/throttling down while in game.

Thank You and I really wish you can help me.

Settings look right so far. Did you:

Create 2D and 3D profiles?

How did you make the 2D profile? This is how I do it. I simply hit the reset button, click save, hit the preset button #1. Then I set the 2D profile under the profiles tab to preset #1. Then set your 3D to whatever profile/preset you desire.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
^** What should happen is when there i no 3D load, AB will load profile 1, and after 20-30 seconds, the clocks will drop from your 2D profile down to 300/150 or whatever base you have which will be different depending on the number of screens you use.

Extract the DLL files into AB's folder and the other sys32/syswow folders?

The settings were just used before, currently I have 2D clocks when browsing but would have 3D clocks when GPU load is really high, when it is not, like gaming with GTA4, LA Noire, CSGO and games like such, it would downclock sometimes.

I used to, I think. I'm sorry but I don't seem to understand the instructions well. Are those the want0 want1 values? I do not know which DLL files you are talking about though. Which software should I use? MSI AB or CCC? Because presets are for CCC and profiles are for MSI AB right? I am sorry for the confusion. Please help me clear this out.

Thank You!

EDIT: No I have done neither, I actually don't know how to do either. rolleyes.gif I hope you can guide me how to do these things. Thank You!

Read Post #1 and Post #2 as it pertains to you. Btw, you should not be using CCC/Overdrive for anything. You cannot use unofficial method and Overdrive at the same time. Open Catalyst, going from memory, click preferences choose restore default to disable overdrive.

OK I have done the DLL's, The thing I'm stuck now with is the 2D and 3D clocks. Although I do not get screen flickering. I only get clock fluctuations in certain games.

EDIT: Should I disable Powerplay now? What should I do after doing the DLL's. I am just doing a single monitor setup too.
EDIT: I did not have Overdrive enabled though.

@tsm106 I have the DLL files part done. Do I also have to do the MSIAB patch thingy? What should I do then? Should I disable Powerplay now? When I disable powerplay, would I still be able to have 2D clocks on 2D task like browsing the web but automatically have 3D clocks the whole time I am gaming? Thanks for the help

Yes, set AB to do unofficial mode with powerplay disabled/bypassed. Now the only thing left is setting your profiles up. Once setup, check apply overclocking at startup.

2D profile: click reset then save to preset 1

3D profile: whatever you want here
