You don't want the gpu running at 2D clocks (default clocks). For the record nothing actually runs at default clocks, there are two other powerstates that we have no control over. Anyways setting the 2D profile to your default clock is a method to allow the card to kick into low idle powerstate, typically 300/150 or 500/150. These clockspeeds are what you want on the desktop. Btw, 500/150 vs 300/150 should not make a noticeable difference in temps.

Single screen clocks should be 300/150 and dual or higher is 500/150. Now the difficulty is that you have a boost card and that combined with AMD's perplexing stance on overclocking has created a lot of issues due to the way boost functions under load. I assume something is preventing your card from dropping al the way down to low idle of 300/150 but with the boost bios, who knows whats going on. With a reference or non-boost card this method works and is quite reliable. Given this I can understand where Unwinder is coming from. It's not AB that is broke, its what AMD has done or is not doing.

Oh another thing to test is if your card can actually get down to the lowest state, 300/150. Close AB, and run gpuz. Leave the machine idle on the sensors tab and wait for the clocks to drop. Is it hitting 300 or 500?

Btw, one trick I use is I don't even run AB on the desktop. It's only when I play a heavy duty game that I click the shortcut to AB on my startbar. This way on the desktop I don't have to worry this or that, then when it's time to frag, run AB so I have my OSD ingame.

Is there anyway to automatically tell the GPU that when a game is running to disable powerplay so that it would run 3D OC clocks all the way? Then after exiting the game, MSI AB would automatically disable powerplay?

Yeah, Problems like this are usually from boost cards.rolleyes.gif Actually wanted the normal OC ed, got OC ed with boost instead. AMD better fix this thing in the next drivers.

Tested its running 500.

Thanks for all the help, seems like I'd have to live with the stuttering.

Wait, so technically on desktop you are not running an OC at all? Then before you'd enter a game, you would open MSI AB, then click on the desired OC? But on desktop you are running stock clocks so 2D is down right?

Correct, no OC on desktop using the default clocks profile, for ex. preset 1. When the 2D profile is loaded the card will/should drop to low idle clocks.

When AB is run before entering a game, it will auto load the 3D clocks you previously setup in your 3D profile so you don't have to manually apply it.

Btw, you set your 3D profile to max the Powerlimit % right?

Oh ok, It would have been ok for me if only the idle clocks went back down to 300. Problem is, even if I close AB, powerplay is still disabled and I still get constant 3D OC clocks as reported by GPU-Z.

Stuttering is not too constant and isn't really consistent with an exact time frame. They'd happen when you move the mouse really quickly. It happens on games like GTA4, LA Noire, CS GO and games that do not have constant GPU Usage levels. It is like an FPS drop for a split second then it'd go back up to normal spec again. It least happens on GTA4, presumably since it has higher GPU usage than the others due to the mods and ENB. LA Noire has the occasional drop, but CS GO has the most when you have been playing for more than an hour or so.

Yup Powerlimit straight to +20

EDIT: Just wanted to know if there was any other way 3D clocks would go up automatically, disabling powerplay, when launching a game. Since your tactic does not seem to work for me.

There's a few methods to force clocks/usage on boost cards.

One, enable force constant voltage.

Two, force the card to allow more than +20 Powerlimit.

What you do is follow the guide for Afterburner install - official overclock method aka -xcl Part 1 for single cards

Then follow the guide for Yahoo, +50 Powertune

Then reboot and test.

For some background on the +50. Technically it is supposed to raise the TDP limit of the card but that's not actually possible because the TDP limit is locked in hardware. It's a bit of an unknown what is happening with the +50 exactly, but it does look like it prevents throttling for some users.

What I suspect is that at the default +20 setting, the setting is not taking full effect so throttling happens. Perhaps the card is only able to get up to +10 or something. Thus the exta headroom from the +50 just ensures that your card can hit the max TDP that is allowed.

In layman's terms the boost cards aren't able to take advantage of the maxing the Powerlimit and this hack allows the boost card to hit the original Powerlimit target. I'm still skeptical but I cannot deny that it seems to work for some ppl so you can give it a try too.

One more thing, AB 2.3.1 made the idle to 500, I actually don't know why, but after uninstalling, Idle went back down to 300. It probably has something to do with the unofficial overclocking thing.

Oh another thing to test is if your card can actually get down to the lowest state, 300/150. Close AB, and run gpuz. Leave the machine idle on the sensors tab and wait for the clocks to drop. Is it hitting 300 or 500?

One more thing, AB 2.3.1 made the idle to 500, I actually don't know why, but after uninstalling, Idle went back down to 300. It probably has something to do with the unofficial overclocking thing.

It's the driver. AMD has been removing support for software overclocking. Compatibility used to be pretty high with AB but since drivers 12.x interoperability has gone way down.

How would I know if the +50 powertune has worked? Will it show in MSI AB? Thanks!
