Black screen on Intelburn test.

For some reason when running Intelburn Test, my screen will just black out. The computer continues to run the test and never shuts off, no BSOD, the screen just goes black and the power LED on it flashes on/off like the computer is in Standby. Ive got to hard shutdown it to get it to come back on.

I replaced my Freezer 7 Pro with an H60 a week ago or so and have been wanting to get this thing up to 4ghz.

Hmm, on an i7 920 which runs at 2.66GHz, it would be quite an achievement to run it at 4GHz.

But let's see... the i7 920 has a max TDP of 130W, although I'm not sure but I suspect that with a 4GHz, it'll be even more.
A 9800GT has a 105W TDP, so technically, there should be power enough.

Now erm... when you run the stresstest and the screen goes black, does it get back on when the stresstest is over?

4ghz is not some magical feat with these chips, lol. 5ghz yeah, but its extremely common to run 920s at 4. Tons of people do it.

Itll be running Intelburntest, Ill be on the 3rd or 4th run and the screen just goes black. It acts exactly like it does when the computer is in standby- the LED on the monitor flashes on and off. I think that it may be the monitor going off from inactivity, but it never comes back on if I move the mouse or whatever. Ive changed my settings in Windows so that the monitor never turns off, and Ill see if it does it again.

Lol, hell, I couldn't even get my i7 980X past 4GHz, let alone 5! tongue.gif

Anyway, back ontopic now: Most black screens are - I think - due to graphic card issues. So here's what I would try:

1) Update the graphic divers to the newest version.
2) Do the stresstest again on stock settings. If it does it again, RMA the card.
3) Put the GPU in a friend's case and test it in there as well.

I would check how much wattage the system is pulling from the wall. If it's at or near your PSU's maximum, it may not be able to produce enough power to keep everything happy.Keep hwmonitor open and watch all of your voltages too: if they start wavering a lot or undervolting at a certain time, it's not good. It's also possible that you're triggering a heat safety: what are your cores and cpu temps while running the test before it shuts off? You mentioned that you just replaced the HSF, so maybe you've got bad contact and need to reseat.

How high you can push a CPU depends a lot on which stepping it is and almost as much just by the chip's randomness. Depending on demand and supply, Intel may clock a chip that would normally have been clocked higher as a 920.

Note: If you're running a 920 at 4GHz, then you have to have bumped voltages, which also means that you're likely running higher than its normal TDP.

I think it was the windows 7 setting that turns the display off after a couple minutes, i guess with the stress of the test going on it wouldnt bring it back on. Not really sure though, but I turned the power saving setting off and it works fine.

The 920 is running 191x21 4009mhz right now on 1.225 volts. Im going to keep tweaking it to see if I can get the voltage a little lower. Its Intelburntest stable for 10 runs on maximum, memtest86+ stable as well. 10.1 sec 1M super pi.
