Best Monitor for Gaming? 42"? Any Help? +rep

post #1 of 17

I am looking for two monitors both will be hooked up to my computer. One will be used for streaming, watching movies, random other stuff. The other will be for Gaming. What I am looking for is the best quality per dollar. Has anyone seen a really good 42" for a good deal? And a perfect gaming monitor?

I've gotta say, I think these korean 27" monitors are the best for gaming if you are a graphics whore and care about image quality. The image quality on these monitors is so great it makes each and every game look soooo much better! The refresh rate is fantastic, and unless your hyper sensitive I'm not sure anyone could detect any input lag on these displays. Others may recommend a 120hz panel for gaming, and it will give you the most fluid image, however all 120hz panels are TN panels. Which are lacking a bit in image quality and vibrancy. I personally prefer a higher quality image with a higher pixel density, than a 120hz panel.

As for TV's I'm quite smitten with the Samsung UN40D6300. I don't have one, but I have seen it a few times. After doing my research for TV, it was the TV I had decided on. I only never bought it because of financial reasons, and my 27" crossover really satisfies my desire for a large panel. I hope this helps a bit! thumb.gif

42"!? God no. One of the nicer 120Hz panels I would highly recommend. My Asus VG236HE's are the best gaming monitors I have used yet. For a computer monitor your looking for higher PPI, high refresh rate, and of course the image quality/vibrancy. A 42" screen if your sitting close to it will look horrid and make you dizzy while gaming. Sitting further away from it will help but then you just spent all this extra money to get the same effect. So keep that in mind.

I agree with ezikiel12, you dont need a 42" unless your more than a few feet away from the monitor-- it will hurt your eyes if not. 27" would probably be your ideal size.

If you play RPG games or RTS games i would recommend getting a single monitor (27") and save the money from the other monitor to grab a better graphics card (if the one you currently have is not that great) you dont want an amazing monitor with a crappy GPU or it simply takes away from the performance and quality.

If you want to have a nice setup and play racing games and such maybe try a dual or tri setup with 23" or 24" monitors (but that would prob not be a great movie setup and such).

Post your rig and the specific things you want to do with the monitors (besides watching movies streaming and such) what games specifically/ spending range/ performance want. hope that helps

Perhaps I was not clear enough.

I am looking for two different TVs. Both will be hooked up to my computer. One will be for guest/viewing pleasure. The other will be for gaming.

The one I am using like a television, will be 42". The one I am using for gaming probably 27 to 32".

I am trying to get a cost effective television and gaming monitor, but I need it to suit my games for performance.

ok i got it.

In my opinion the best bang for your buck TV around the 40-42"s are these two

40"= http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889253293

42"= http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889210091

now im not saying these are the "best", but i am saying they are great for the amount of money your spending (check the reviews). If youd like you can still get beter ones (but you wont really notice a huge difference) and pay anywhere from $300-600 more for it.

For the gaming monitor, i should stress a few things first. MOST 27" monitors have a resolution of 1920X1200//1920X1080. Those are exactly the same as a 24" monitors so you get basically a lesser image quality overall since the image is streched to fit the screen.

Considering this, my advice is to either choose the best 24" gaming monitor or go all in and take a 30" monitor (resolution of 2560 X 1600).

(23-4" monitors) If you are going for gaming at 1080P you should just try 3D (but some people claim it stresses their eyes a bit more). It counts much more in a shooter than better colors.

While at 27" the only thing I can recommend is a large format 2560x1440 display but those are expensive.

Also (probably my recommendation) is to get a 30" 2560 x 1600 (if you can afford it) (i dont know your spending limit, so im providing you allot of options)

Usually when the size of the monitor and resolution exceed 1920/1080= the response time goes up a few seconds (but personally i dont believe response time by a few seconds makes a HUGE difference)

if you do not care about price and want probably the best monitor overall i recommend this 30"-- Dell UltraSharp U3011 30"

27"= http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260038

anything below a 27" is great too but your after something around a 27-30" so these are my recommendations! smile.gif hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions+

The Philips 40PFL5507 is in my option the best Movie and Gaming TV ->

Panel technology: UV²A
Average Delta-E: 3.1
Contrast over: 5000:1
Average ghosting time: 10ms
Max input lag: 33ms
Price 55" = 1400€
Price 40" = 680€
Price 32" = 515€

Philips 40PFL5507 is a bad choice in my opinion. too expensive, you dont get better resolution than 1920x1080 so your screen is essentially just a stretched version of a normal 23" monitor yet your paying almost 3x the price. basically: to expensive and cons outweigh the pros

Then show us a better Monitor or TV. The first 2 TV you posted are old CCFL TV's with no reviews and the other 3 are IPS Monitors that have more ghosting and have a 6 times lower contrast and have aggressive AG Coating and have IPS-Glow.
And it doesn't matter how big the screen is what matters is how far away your are from the screen.

The monitor you linked is a *VA panel, which is even worse for gaming though. Responsiveness is on par with a low end IPS. At ~$1200 is also extremely overpriced for a 42". You can get a 50" plasma for that price that will completely blow it out of the water, or a 30" H-IPS 2560x1600 display.
