There is also a PLX chip under the glowing red ROG eye heatsink on the Extreme board, it is bypassed when only one or two video cards are installed.

Well z77 is a nice platform for oc'ing your ram,if you are into overclocking you'll be having fun oc'ing your 2400mhz Trident-X,these kits are quite affordable(talking about 2x4gb 2400mhz Trident-X) if you consider their speeds.
I would highly recommend you those kits.
If you are on air cooling then don't push your i7 3770k beyond 4.7ghz for 24/7 use,try to keep the voltage within 1.35v.

The plx chip may be used for splitting the pci-ex lanes when 3 gpu's are installed, however I'm not sure about this.
For benching, installing 3 gpu's on Maximus V Formula may not be a good choice as 2 gpu's will be running @ x4,this can cause bad results,if these would have been @ x8 on all 3 gpu's then it would have been okey with it.
Thats why if you are into 3way or 4way gpu benching,Maximus V Extreme will be the perfect choice.

Hmm, interesting. Guess we'll have to see the benches that bear this out.

Yes but the formula....why does the FORMULA have a PLX chip if it can only do 2way SLI/CFX??

Ithe extreme has to have 2 PLX's in order to be 4way capable...im curios about the Formula. Would it be because of the x4 slots that are avalible for NIC cards or RAID cards?

Deffenently into OC. and yes I plan to Air cool for phase 1 of my build. I will probably have it in a like 300R case with a decent heatsink and a mild OC maybe 4.2ghz whild i build a Switch 810 with rads and more stuff biggrin.gif

as far as the ram goes i do hear that USB3 speeds are affected by how fast your ram is and Well i have only used Gskill since the P4 days so I trust them and 2x 4gb of 2400 and add another kit of the same ram later....just because lol

The Formula can do 3way sli/cf @ x8/x4/x4,thus the plx chip may be used for splitting the lanes, however in Formula the plx chip won't provide extra lanes.
You already have the 300R? If not get the 400R for now.
Now for the RAM,well you can't go wrong with Gskill & Corsair, these two are my favourite.
The usb gets affected when you are into LN2 or DICE cooling,so its recommended to turn the usb off during extreme benching.

Sli does not work in x4 mode. There is another reason for putting the PLX on it then more GPUs. because as far as I am aware the Formula can only do 2way and you need the extreme to do 3way or 4way
Like it was on 1156 with the Formula and the Extreme if i remember correcly the formula was only 2 way capable and the extreme has an NF200 chip on it.

Atleast the Formula can run 3way crossfire, check asus.com,for the sli part you may be right, but running 3way gpu @ 8x/4x/4x will be a bad idea.
Benchers, gamers going with 2 gpu's,for them Formula is perfect & benchers, gamers going with 3/4 gpu's,for them Extreme is perfect.

The Formula is 3-way most dudest, please move into the light.
