The Maximus 5 Formula has a PLX IC, but not for the PCI-E lanes from the CPU for the GPUs, rather for expanding the PCI-E lane package of the PCH to accommodate things like thunderbolt connector and the thunderbolt card thing for audio as well as all the rest of the connectivity. BTW thunderbolt, actual thunderbolt and not the card, it requires 4x PCI-E 2.0 lanes and the native PCH only has 8X PCI-E 2.0 lane which have to be divvied up, so on all boards or almost all you see with thunderbolt, you will usually see a PCI-E bridge chip from PLX to consolidate those lanes.
I saw the formula and held it and took a good look at it, as one guy i met had one.
