Microsoft yesterday added ammunition to its increasingly aggressive battle to get users off the nearly-11-year-old Windows XP by citing a company-sponsored report that claims annual support costs for the older OS are more than five times that of Windows 7.

I wonder if included in that quote is the price of DDR RAM or Legacy parts.

I don't think so, How many OS's do you want them to support? XP, Vista, 7 and the forthcoming 8? It's simply too much. While I loved XP for years, especially while the tragedy called Vista happened. They deserve to put it to rest.

Why would a trade oriented business waste money/capital going to Windows 7 for no gain, other than further fueling MS's bottom line.

I have Win7 and XP at my work, and it doesn't matter at all. Why they tried putting some on 7, I do not know.

The only tragic thing about Vista is the delusion that it was bad. XP pre-SP1 was terrible and you want bad? Try Me but I assume you're too young to remember them.

I also don't know why MS are dropping support for XP and leaving all companies who refuse to upgrade in the dark. It could have something to do with its archaic and outdated architecture but that's just a guess, right?

Because it costs them money to support it while not gaining any.

Idea behind every sold product, is that as soon as new version is available it becomes the main focus and company is trying to sell it to it's userbase. The reason behind support of older versions is to please customers and allow them to use the older version product without problems, allowing for smooth transition once are ready.

I doubt software companies have any legal obligations to support sold product for X years.

^ this

Frankly I don't understand the hate towards Vista, especially considering a lot of those sheeple actually never tried it. I switched to Vista 64 bit when I got 4GB ram and loved it after I put some work into it. Going to windows 7 felt like a service pack (which it kinda is).

XP is just way too outdated if you know how to work Vista and W7. Searching the start menu, pinning programs and folders, Aero peek, etc. are all things I can't go without anymore without getting severely annoyed.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Outdated, hardly. With legacy support of programs, great compatibility, ease of use, simple. Its back to basics of an OS, and many programs I use are VERY old, for good reason, they don't need to be changed every time a new Computer OS comes out.

Why waste time and money for no productivity gain?

OH NOES ITS WIN7 ITS SO NEW, meanwhile you waste thousands changing rigs over to it, for no gain at all.
