Realtek ALC898 vs. Xonar DX vs. Xonar DSX

I'm planning on getting a Swans M10. I've got a Realtek ALC898 onboard, will I notice a difference in sound quality between that and the Xonar DX/DS? also, what's the difference between the DX and the DSX?

I have a DX I love but I wish I had got the DSX as it has option for a daughter board that adds 5.1 option all with full size RCA connectors

Wrong. DSX is the PCIe version of DS, which is inferior to DX on anything beside a swappable OP-AMP.

898 < DSX < DX in terms of sound quality. Although I suspect 898 and DSX to be really close.

The 898 is far superior. It's a 2012 speced dac that pushes. 110SNR. The DX is 4 years old!

Specs don't tell you every thing about how a dac sound neither does graphs. The ALC 898 is not superior then the DX , you simply don't look at numbers and go something is better then another because it has a higher SNR then another. The components they used is also important. The ALC898 uses cheap components like the rest of the onboard audio even if they did improve it SQ by little, it still is not superior to a good sound card including DX.

Just because the DX is old do not mean new generation of onboard dac's is better then it, as those same on board dacs like I mention still use cheap generic components.People these days think just because realtek improve the spec of there on boad audio that it just as good as good sound cards or that sound cards is moot point now their not. Not when Analog sound quality is at hand. IF the op was talking about using Digital output then it be a totally different story as the device would be used sending Digital data into the dac, so the dac can handle the work.

SNR does not directly indicate sound quality, and DX/D1 are still very capable sound cards.
